Just went to GW's site and got this:
To help us continually offer you the best experience on games-
workshop.com and help us manage the site, we and carefully
selected third parties will store some information on your computer
using cookies. Only by allowing us to store cookies on your
computer can you browse the website and see the entire range of
Citadel miniatures. To find out more about what cookies are, the ones
this site uses and how to delete them, check out our privacy notice.
Is this new because I've never seen it before on this nor any other site before I've even got to the homepage. I'm wondering if it's even legal in the UK to basically force me to share whatever infornation they have with "carefully selected third parties". I can't even read the privacy policy without first agreeing to this.
It's also a bit rich, but par for the course I suppose, for them to claim that it's for my benefit.

Not my point at all. You can't even enter the site any more without agreeing that they can share your details with unknown third parties. Nothing to do with paranoia. Everything to do with GW taking liberties.
Oh,and so glad to have found such a friendly forum.

Oh we're plenty friendly here.
But please do note that you're making a big hubbub about something which you can easily find out the exact specifics of. They are not sharing your details with "unknown third parties".
Here is a list as to the Privacy Policy and what Cookies are stored on your computer.

I'm thinking paranoia. Every site on the internet drops a cookie on you. If you think that only GW does this, then boy are you in for a surprise.

You're right Kan that I did misread the bit about third parties. Bugger. Who are the third parties though and why do they need to put cookies on my computer? I promise it's nothing to do with paranoia, I do think that it's odd that I can't even look at the privacy policy until I have agreed that to the third party cookie thing. Perhaps I came across wrong.

Nothing to do with random paranoia, GW is just making sure you agree to there policy in line with the new cookie legislation that is being passed in the EU

It's alright. I was too agressive. I apologize.
Most sites you visit give you cookies. Google has a ton of cookies, the biggest one being AdSense, a way to track what you're interested in buying.
I'd recommend getting Ghostery. It's a free extension that shows you all the cookies that are on the website you're on, and can block them selectively.

GW posted this on there facebook page today
Hi everyone,
If you're in the EU you may have noticed a box appearing when you visit games-workshop.com. The reason you are being asked to confirm your acceptance of cookies is to make sure that Games Workshop is fully compliant with EU legislation.
We have updated our Privacy and Cookies Policy to reflect these changes and thought you should all be the first to know. After all, the last thing we want is for you to be worried about random pop-ups on your computer.
Rest assured, Servitor 13 has your best interests at heart. Now let's fire up the lascannons.

Many sites have been doing this for a fair while now, nothing big to it really. As for mine they automatically delete when I shut the browser.
Cookies like these generally stretch as far as what other sites you may happen to visit and what region. I'm not sure how this will work marketing-wise with GW anywhere but within their own site mostly or with these third parties which if paranoia has anything to say about it could be perhaps New Line Cinema.

Quantcast Data Analytics, Google Analytics, and SaleCycle Pixel Capture.
Quantcast Data Analytics is not currently gathering information, but they do have cookies simply because they might use them at some point in the future.
Google Analytics logs you, as an anonymous user, and it basically tracks which pages you have visited, your general geographic locale, and how long you've interacted with GW's website.
SaleCycle Pixel Capture is not an actual cookie, but it passes data to SaleCycle who store data on GW's behalf about "order abandonment".

Thanks Chowderhead.
Ironic silence, my point is that I can't even read what the policy is without first agreeing to it. Seem a bit arse backards to me. Can't get onto the site at all.
I'm not scared and I know that I will have to agree, it just annoys me. (which doesn't take much).

As everyone's already mentioned it's nothing to worry about, but I do agree it's a bit odd that you have to agree to the privacy policy before you can read the privacy policy!
Also...
From GW's Privacy Policy...
- We may collect details of your visits to our site including, but not limited to, the resources that you access.
So do you reckon, if I visit the GW site everyday and look at the Sisters of Battle models but never buy any they might hurry up and give us a real codex/new figures?

As I already mentioned, it's very likely that they decided to put a pop-up ad just so that they are making it very clear that these cookies exist.
I mean, look at this thread. It's a perfect example of a reactionary response. This privacy policy has been in effect for who knows how long, and those cookies have been on machines for quite awhile(excepting when they get removed by the users when they clear their cookies, of course) with nobody raising a ruckus.

Heres another update from GW guess you can view the PP before agreeing, just wanted done in the best of ways
"Afternoon everyone,
Just a quick clarification on the cookies agreement required by the new EU legislation. Like many websites, we store cookies on your machine to ensure that your machine remembers where in the world you are, whether you are logged in, and the contents of your basket. All of this is simply to allow you to shop with ease. The full breakdown of the cookies we use can be found in our Privacy Policy and Terms of Use pages.
By clicking the words 'privacy policy' in the box on the Landing Page before you accept, you should be able to review this document before agreeing to this.
Apologies for any confusion this has caused - your GW browsing experience and what we do with cookies hasn't really changed much, it's simply new legislation that means we present it to you in a different way. If you have any more questions about this, please let us know!
Thanks,
Servitor 14"

Live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about his religion. Respect others in their views and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life. Beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and of service to your people. When your time comes to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song, and die like a hero going home.

It is actualy good of GW to do this. They are one of the first to comply with the new laws about cookies and advising people of the use on there site. It will become allot more commen over the next few months, although many many sites will not comply with the law. Just look at the number who don't comply with distance selling Regs.

Basically, a website talks to your computer, through your web browser, and lets you view the website.
Now, if the website has to explain everything, from the start, to your computer each time you visit it becomes time consuming. So the website leaves a bit of information on your computer, and takes a bit of information from your computer, so that next time you come back to that site it can load nice and quickly.
This is how websites can remember your passwords and logins, every website does it and it's a normal part of using the internet. Theres no need for panic or outrage.

This seems like a very weird move by whoever wrote the legislation. People these days get paranoid every time the word 'privacy' is mentioned, and the more prominent the message, the more scared or angry people get (no matter what the message says). The recent hype over Google's changed privacy policies shows this. People would honestly feel safer if you didn't tell them anything.

The point is people need to be educated. Ad companys in genaral have shown they cannot be trusted with cookies and people need to be protected. Advertising companys ruin so much for everyone. Too many ahve no ethics at all and people need to be paranoid about privacy.
