Can it be done? Phoenix Lords cannot lead other aspect warriors besides their own, but can they join a non-aspect warrior squad?

In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Yup, the only restriction on them is on joining other Aspects. Nothing stopping them from joining units that aren't Aspect Warriors, just like any other IC.
Note though that Exarch powers don't work on Guardians.

Yeah, that''s true, just useful in game if you have the need for it - Fearless Guardians, protection for the Phoenix Lord, etc.

Definitely allowed- independent characters but with the restriction that they cannot join other aspects. I really, really want a shining spears and warp spiders phoenix lord!

Independent Characters with Fearless make units they join Fearless, aka Chaplains (the other unit I've used that does this).

Independent characters lose fearless when they join units, however fearless units make non-fearless characters fearless as the entry in the special rules section is not accompanied by an asterisk.

They don't. Reverse is true though. VladTheImpaler posted full explanation.
Chaplains don't have "Fearless" USR per se, they have "Honour of the Chapter" special tule that makes the Chaplain and all members of a squad that he has joined Fearless.
