Hi guys,

Today I present you something different. A black templar. I haven't stopped painting blood angels by any means.
This will be a gift for my gaming buddy. He owns a beautifully painted black templars army, but I think he will appreciate it nevertheless.

Hope you like him.

black armor needs highlights, sword looks dull, cape and tan need highlights, the base is meh and his head looks bad, needs more detail.

imo this is at table top quality, not lower not higher.

Ummm.... I see highlights on the black armor..... IMO there is some glare issue that's going on in these photos, whether its a gloss varnish or the lighting i dunno and it seems to detract from the model. The sword thing I can kinda see.... perhaps a brighter silver worked in from the edges to give it a more "sharp" edged look The base, as a general rule I wouldn't use a main color for the army (black/gray) as the base color as well. Though I guess the more important question overall is, does it match your buddy's army? If so, well done.

Initial success, or total failure.

Not bad by any stretch of the imagination, but I have to say that blood angels are more your thing

Hey I like this guy. There is clearly grey edge highlights on the black armor. I really like the way you did the backpack and the back of the model looks right. Overall its solid.

I can't help but feel there is something missing from the front. Three things I'd do:
I would try to fit some templar iconography on the front tan robes. Mabye on the center chest area like the GW paintjob of this model.
I think the face could use more depth with maybe a wash.
And the last nitpick, maybe a reflective highlight on the bolter lenses.
As always I like the combination of colors you use. Hope I didn't nitpick tooo much.

Thanks for all the comments, guys. Highly appreciate it.

I will redo the sword. I was in a hurry and messed it up a bit.

Concerning the highlighting and the base. Since this piece will be a gift I tried to be as close to his style as possible. His highlighting is very subtle, unlike I'm doing it usually.

And his bases are grey. That's that. It would be no use for him if I stick it on a lava base. ^^

This isn't a showcase piece by any means. He shall be fielded on the battleground smashing faces, so tabletop quality is all I tried to achieve.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I tried to make a better picture, but I have to admit that I suck at it. ^^
But I guess it's a little better. The highlights are more visible and the glaring effect is gone.

maybe give the face a little more definition with a flesh wash in the recesses and some bleach bone highlights...

you can also give the cape a little more definition by adding sephia wash in the recesses.

and make the sword a little bit brighter to make it more of a focal point, just for visual interest.

overall its a pretty good mini, i never painted black templars so i cant judge on how well i could have done it

Maybe if you painted tiny white lightning on the sword as a thing to make it pop, but the 2nd picture does make it good

I feel you on the photography thing man. I've not got it down pat either. Though in the new pic I can see more highlights on the tabard and inner cloak. Looks solid man specially if your held to the definitions set by another person's army.

Initial success, or total failure.
