5 arrested in alleged plot to blow up Cleveland-area bridge By David Ariosto, CNN

The FBI released photos of five men who allegedly plotted to blow up a bridge in Ohio.STORY HIGHLIGHTS
The suspects' initial plan, officials say, was to "topple financial institution signs atop high rise buildings"
FBI: They conspired to acquire C-4 explosives and build improvised explosive devices
Authorities say three of the men are self-proclaimed anarchists
Five suspects are accused of conspiring to blow up a bridge near Cleveland
(CNN) -- A mohawk-wearing anarchist nicknamed "Cyco" was among five men arrested after allegedly conspiring to blow up a bridge about 15 miles south of Cleveland, the FBI said Tuesday.

Douglas L. Wright, 26, joined alleged co-conspirators Brandon L. Baxter, 20, a.k.a. "Skabby," and Anthony Hayne, 35, a.k.a. "Tony" and "Billy," in a plot that authorities say honed in on the Brecksville-Northfield High Level Bridge, which spans the Cuyahoga Valley National Park and carries a four-lane highway.

The men were arrested Monday evening in an FBI sting, but posed no real danger to the public because the explosives were inert and were controlled by an undercover FBI agent, the bureau said in a statement.

The men have been charged with conspiracy and attempted use of explosive materials to damage physical property affecting interstate commerce.

Connor C. Stevens, 20, and Joshua S. Stafford, 23, were also arrested. Their charges remain pending.

"Clearly this was a sting operation," said Fran Townsend, a CNN National Security contributor, describing the use of at least one covert agent in the operation.

Authorities said at least three of the men are self-proclaimed anarchists who had considered "a series of evolving plots over several months."

"The complaint in this case alleges that the defendants took specific and defined actions to further a terrorist plot," said U.S. Attorney Steven Dettelbach. "The defendants stand charged based not upon any words or beliefs they might espouse, but based upon their own plans and actions."

The men allegedly conspired to acquire C-4 explosives and build two improvised explosive devices to be remotely detonated.

At first, officials said, the men had considered using smoke grenades to distract local law enforcement in an effort to "topple financial institution signs atop high rise buildings."

Yeah, why not "TERRORISM!!!eleven!"

I'm being a little sarcastic, but it surprises me that the Gov't glosses over things that are technically internal terrorism, and calls the mexican drug situation "terrorism" instead...

I don't get Anarchists.. What do they want, exactly?

I can think of at least three groups, probably four.

the 99'rs want a sane government that looks after the interests of all, and not just the ones that can buy politicians. They are using peaceful protests, and working within the law to accomplish this.

Anarchists want no government at all and like blowing stuff up. I can't really speak for them as I am not of that philosophy.

but if you already know they have different means, then you already know they are not the same.

The "99ers" that I know in common parlance refers to the unemployed who have exhausted their unemployment benefits and thus qualify for the 99 weeks of unemployment insurance. This is a group that covers approximately 7 million people, for reference, so it's actually a sizable group.

There's also the Ninety Nines (International Organization of Women Pilots), which was formed for the mutual support and general advancement of the needs of female pilots.

And then there's the occupy [city name], whom use the slogan "we are the 99%", but I've never actually heard anyone refer to them as 99ers.

According to many posters on Dakka ... yes.

Well we should be clear. The FBI is saying anarchists, but they were initially contacted at an OWS rally. Maybe they are peaceful Houston type OWS. Maybe they are Oakland type OWS.

But I think we can all agree, they've lived with an ongoing bad hair day for what looks like years.

A member of Occupy Cleveland said he saw all five suspects at a meeting for the organization Sunday. He said he considered three of them friends and they never talked about anything violent with him.

Three of the suspects had references to Occupy Cleveland on what appeared to be their Facebook pages. Brandon Baxter , Joshua Stafford and Tony Hayne all said on Facebook that they worked at #OccupyCleveland and live in Cleveland, Ohio .

Tell me again how there's no connection between these guys and the Occupy movement.

The Occupy Whatever movement is neither anarchist nor is it inherently violent. While Biccat can, of course, continue to insist and lie about this to try to muddy the debate, the previous statement still remains true. In fact ,given that the Occupy Whatever movement is usually asking for GREATER regulation and GREATER government involvement, calling them anarchist is kind of silly.

I mean if I said that all Christians are murderous psychopaths who want to destroy everything to bring about their God's will, I'm fairly certain he'd be offended.

(Of course, knowing him, he's probably deluded enough to think that of me anyway...)

1. We have no proof they are Christians. I'd proffer they aren't based on being an anarchist/OWS alone.
2. Christians don't blow up bridges. They pray them down.

If you want to claim that a few nuts going off and doing something horrible means that the entire movement is associated with their violence and unrelated political beliefs, than that opens a can of worms that I don't think any of us wants to see open. Because they're daemonworms from hell.

I'm disappointed they should have involved themselves in a plot to blow up a bridge.

then why did you link them together?
those 5 were not members of the occupy movement, they went there to recruit people to their own cause.

http://www.cnn.com/2012/05/01/justice/ohio-bridge-arrests/index.html
"During the event on October 21, 2011, an undercover FBI employee observed "four suspicious males with walkie-talkie radios around their necks," the complaint says. Some of the men also donned black masks while carrying anarchist flags and "acted differently than the other people in attendance."

The men were "constantly moving through the crowd expressing displeasure at the crowd's unwillingness to act violently," it says."

but if you're trying to compare these 5 to everyone in a movement, even though they did not support the goals and ideals of said movement, then Anders Behring Breivik represents all christians. and that church in Penn that kidnapped a bunch of kids at gunpoint represent all churches. and one pitbull that bites a cop represents all dogs. Taking the actions of a few people to slander and entire group is just pointless and idiotic.

Are you disputing that there was a connection between the individuals arrested and the Occupy Cleveland movement?

A member of Occupy Cleveland said he saw all five suspects at a meeting for the organization Sunday.

Three of the suspects . . . all said on Facebook that they worked at #OccupyCleveland

Seems pretty definitive.

Uh oh, looks like Talcom Powder man is at it again.
http://news.yahoo.com/more-white-powder-incidents-york-police-see-occupy-174352834--finance.html

..NEW YORK (Reuters) - Three new envelopes containing suspicious white powder were sent to New York City banks and news organizations on Tuesday, along with notes suggesting the sender sympathizes with the Occupy Wall Street's Day of May 1 protests, police said.

A total of ten letter-sized envelopes were sent over the last two days, and at least some contained an identical note saying "This is a reminder that you are not in control" and "Happy May Day," police spokesman Paul Browne said.

In all ten cases, the substance turned out to be non toxic and in several cases the powder was identified as corn starch, Browne said.

The letters appeared intended to coordinate with a planned day of May 1 protests organized by the Occupy Wall Street movement and labor groups across the country.

"The messages indicated a link to today's May Day demonstrations," Browne said.

Five envelopes were sent to Wells Fargo, while one was sent to J.P. Morgan, and another to Citicorp. Rupert Murdoch's News Corp was also targeted, with one envelope addressed to the Wall Street Journal and a second "possibly" addressed to Fox News, police said.

Another letter, addressed to Mayor Michael Bloomberg, was processed at city offices at 100 Gold Street, and not at City Hall, police said.

Ed Needham, a member of Occupy Wall Street's New York media team, said late on Monday he had found no connection between the envelopes and his movement. "It doesn't sound like something that we would do," he said.

Since it was launched eight months ago, Occupy Wall Street has targeted U.S. financial policies it blames for the yawning income gap between rich and poor - between what they called the 1 percent and the 99 percent.

I think it is just as likely as someone from fox news sent those letters just to make sure they had some sort of smear angle today, just in case the protest was seen to be effective. Until an arrest is made and the trial held who sent the letters and why is really just hear say. It could just as easily have been you frazzled, was there a wiener dog for the postage stamp?
