Hey guys I was browsing through some youtube videos when I came across I guess a rules demonstration for infinity and thus here I am!

If you guys could explain some things for me it might help decide whether or not I want to venture into another gaming system.

1. Cost: How much am I looking to spend here to play appropiate sized games?

2. Learning curve: is it hard to learn? from the videos I can already tell its far different than GW games and PP.

3. is it competitive? I'm a competitive player its why I play games like 40k and WM so wondering if infinity has the same.

4. community: ok I've never even really seen infinity outside dakka, how big is this game? I know in my town no one knows are carries it but I know the town over has a couple of boxes for sale, so i assume they have a player base. I'll be moving here for college so I know for a fact the gaming scene is bigger than my current town. What I want to know is are their active tournaments going on for infinty kinda like the late ard boyz or steam roller for WM?

I guess that covers my questions about the game in general. Now I was hoping you guys could explain the playstyle of some of the factions. I've been looking at PanOceania(?) and the nomads, thanks if you can help me out!

1. Cost: For a 300 point force (which is about equivalent to a 40k/WHFB game of 1500-2000), expect to pay about $100 USD (if I've got my conversions right), maybe a bit more if you want some of the bigger models like TAGs. I'd also recommend buying the books - the rules might be free online, but the fluff sections are only in the books.

2. Learning curve: Easy-ish to learn (if you don't overload yourself with special rules early on - start small with a few small games, use proxies if needs be)... harder to master. Complex but not (overly) complicated, as the saying goes.

3. Is it competitive? There's an official tournament system and ranking, so the game has certainly got its competitive players. And as it's a well balanced system (there are very few bad lists, just bad ways to use them), it actually makes for quite a good system for it - there's no "rock, paper, scissors" of different factions and no power creep (all factions get their updates at once). Mind you, I'm not the best person to ask about competitiveness - I might have won a GT, but it was for Inquisitor...

4. Community: Not huge, but growing. As it's a game which doesn't take huge amounts to get started and has some great models, it's pretty easy to recruit new players. (I was lured into it, and am myself now on about three recruits.)

Hello and welcome to Infinity.

I will just briefly try to answer on your questions (to tired, need sleep ) but I'm sure other guys will expand.

1. Cost: How much am I looking to spend here to play appropiate sized games?

In my opinion very affordable. For example I made very nice 200 points Ariadna list for exactly 60 euros (I'm not sure about exchange rate to dollars). Here is the links from Corvus Belli with some example armies but keep in mind that those prices are higher than the prices of online retailers.

2. Learning curve: is it hard to learn? from the videos I can already tell its far different than GW games and PP

It can be step in the beginning but as you play you'll see that system is very natural and logical. It tends to be more of simulation of modern/futuristic fight than game as GW or PP games. Be prepared to lose good portion of games in the begging.

3. is it competitive? I'm a competitive player its why I play games like 40k and WM so wondering if infinity has the same.

It can be very competitive. Importatnt thing is that the game is more (as many times other people said that) about tactics, how you use what you have than building a list or creating synergies.

4. community: ok I've never even really seen infinity outside dakka, how big is this game?

Only way I can help you here is to give you the links to the players data base both here and on official site. Hopefully you'll find someone close to you. But game is definitely gaining momentum.

Where the sun crosses the field of blood.

1: Seconding MarcoSkoll, though I'd add that you very, very rarely play games above 300 points. Also, you might want to expect to pay a little more than ~100$ to have a varied 300pts force. For $100 you get a varied 150-200pts force, but at 300pts you're probably going to use most models you have.
But to play beginner-sized games, all you need is a starter, and perhaps one more model.
The rules are, as mentioned, free on the interwebs. Also a wiki that helps out a lot to get some of the rules clear.

2: It is very different from GW games.
I'd say it has a peculiar learning curve. There's a lot of odd special rules. I'd say, to learn, let the first game be really basic. Do some testing with basic grunts, maybe a specialist and a better armed lieutenant. Just avoid/ignore some special rules and get a grip on the system itself. After that, move onto including some special rules and units like Camouflage and such.

3: I actually have no idea.

4: It's a growing thing. The Community isn't very large, but it's a very loyal fanbase. To me it feels like an opposite to GW games' community. GW has a very large community, but the community has begun to weaken and criticize GW for some of their moves.
Corvus Belli on the other hand has a smaller, growing fanbase where everyone is very happy and pleased with how CB handles their company.
At least that's how I feel about the communities.

1. Well lets put it this way, I got out of 40k because I couldn't afford it anymore! Months ago I bought the Shasvastii starter set and about three more figs for under $90. There's an force right there without need to add a lot more. Both my forces together do not come close to what I had for 40k were one tank was, at that time $40. I think now it would be around $50.

2. The rules are between something like 40k and a RPG. A lot more detail but worth it. There are also some translation issues but still it's worth it for me.

3. It can be competitive if you want it to be. I'm personally not competitive and don't like tournaments.

4. So far there is the main Infinity site of their own, here, and warseer has like one thread. It really should be it's own by now. Here and the main forum have Living Databases of people you can contact to have a game.

it's hard to explain the play style in General. Each faction is different. The ones you like are both very high tech. PanO has great TAGs and good shooting ability. Nomads have the best/numerous hackers and are very sneaky with a a few camo guys and drop troops.

So I was looking at the warstore and I noticed that some of these factions have two different starter sets, so what is it a faction within a faction?

There is also the sectoral list now. They are subfactions that have special rules if you play with them. Some troops you can take more of while not being able to take any of others. You can always do the generic list that has all troops available to use. For example in a Yu Jing army the AVA of a Celestial Guard is AVA2. In a Imperial sectoral list the AVA is Total. Meaning as much as you want. But it also means I can not take any Invicibles, or Aragoto butai, etc. In addition to the AVA changes you can also do what is called Linked Teams. Not suggest for beginners though.
