Every army I've ever collected has been inspired by a particular model. For my Iron Pact, it was the soulgrinder. For my DarkBloodDeathAngelWing, it was the vindicator. When the new Grey Knights were released, it was the Dreadknight that captured my imagination...

While I've always had a soft spot for the 666th chapter, due to the overwhelming popularity of the codex, I decided to instead create a force representing an Inquisitor's warband that has fallen to Chaos. For this project, I've set myself a few rules/goals:

1) No power armor (having had two complete SM armies in the past, I have zero interest in ever assembling/painting any power armor for the foreseeable future).
2) No psyflemen (most of the bad rep that GK receive seems to stem from these guys)
3) Everything must look like its falling apart / scavenged / defiled by cultists.

Here is my progress so far. Feedback/Critique is always welcome.

This is already one of the best threads I've seen - paintwork perfect, model choices perfect, army concept perfect!

Looking forward to what's next

While the thought of dropping 20+ models out of a stormraven leaves me all tingly...not to my knowledge, no.

I'm really digging the army concept!

How did you paint your vehicles like that? What paints did you use?

Hmmm....that's a little complicated (having been in the hobby since '89, my collection of paints is fairly eclectic).

My rust method is pretty straightforward: the basecoat was a dark brown (espresso, maybe?) krylon spray, followed by a heavy wash of an orangey-brown vallejo paint (the label has rubbed off, unfortunately, but it's pretty close to the old GW vermin fur), finished with some random scrapes of P3 pig iron. If the mood strikes, I'll hit some additional highs & lows with either thinned blazing orange or brown/sepia wash.

For the 'paint' on the vehicles, I essentially stippled thinned bone-colored paint (also vallejo, pretty close to GW's bleached bone), taking care not to hit any of the edges or crevices. A bit of rust streaks here and there with sepia wash on the bolts and battle-damage and I called it good.

As for the blood inscriptions, I just thinned some dark red paint with red ink (rather than water), and used a fine detail brush.

When that was all done, I did a light drybrushing of bubonic brown (an old GW color, 2-3 'versions' ago...back when they had hex-pots) on the lower third or so to represent dust.

The models are looking great what are the Death Cult Asassins based on?

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. It's because we are what we are. For all our faults we stand for law and light.

They're Hellions with their ankles cut & repositioned to stand on flat ground, with Scourge heads. Super simple, not easily confused with anything else, and a double-headed weapon is pretty WYSIWYG for dual power weapons.

Bingo. 'Satin espresso,' ftw.
