I am thinking of running 2 squads of BA devastators: 1 Las, 3x Plasma Cannon. Then put a priest and a MSU ASM squad with 1 melta-gun in a LasPlas Razorback in the bottom floor of the ruin where these guys are.

Their shooting becomes much better against hordes and punching AV11 is still there. The problem with Getting Hot! is mitigated as well.

Would someone please comment on why this might not be as good as it first looks?

Simply put?

Missile Launchers

They do a job as crowd control with frag missiles, they are better anti armour than the plasma cannons with krak missiles, they don't get hot, so don't need an SP and IIRC they're cheaper.

I loves me a bit of plasma, but it's better used on vehicles or give some Honour Guard some PGs so you're not doing anything extra in order to make them 'safe'

It seems your investing alot of points just to bubble wrap the devastators.

I dislike the idea of devoting that much of your army to protecting the Devastators. A Priest is a valuable commodity and usually he wants to be near the thick of the battle.

I do like the idea of running Plasma Cannon's on your Dev's for some BA lists. The real bane of Jump Pack BA is when they run into an opponent that is better in assault than them - since their shooting is limited - especially a Terminator heavy army. The Plasma Cannons mitigate this and let you rip apart heavy troops.

With a 3+ save, the odds of losing a Dev per shot is 1 in 18. I would just rely on my 3+ to keep them safe and fire away. You may fry a few guys here and there, but that is the risk with Plasma anyway.
