I am currently in the midst of painting my dwarf army.

The theme I’m planning for the base is Ruin. Basically parts of these dwarfs stronghold is constantly besieged and held by different enemies so there almost a constant war over them.

I wanted the bases to reflect that, but unfortunately I have no idea how to make the stone tiles on the bases look weathered, cracked and so forth.

Anybody got any tutorials or advice on how to create that effect?

It should be said I don´t care how complex the technique might be, as long as it looks REALLY great, I have put A LOT of energy into my miniatures and to do less with the bases would really be a shame and would (in my mind) break the illusion.

As someone who is also doing a ruined city theme for my bases (albeit mine are 40k, so slightly different), I might be able to help a bit. One way to make cracked flagstones is to get some plasticard and then cut them into several parts, then scrape cracks into them around the shear marks. Small parts of shale can make convincing shards for broken tiles and weathering powders are excellent for making anything look dusty, dirty and tired. I use Forge World's Grey Ash to give my bases that "concrete dust" effect.

EDIT: Mechanicum Jon has an interesting base style which could be co-opted. Roll out some flagstones for your army (roll to an even thickness, then use a knife to cut them into squares), then, after they have dried, smash them in a controlled way. Put the detritus on your bases, and voila, very effective and convicing broken flagstones.

Buy some real floor tiles. What you're looking for is texture that goes with your theme. look at the back of the tiles: more often than not the texture on those is better. Then cut them up with appropriate tools... and very carefully chip them with a screwdriver and hammer OR just smash them to pieces with said hammer.
