Hi, so I tried to start in the hobby last summer, but it didn't work out quite exactly well (because of university summer classes, my job at wal-mart, and trying to buy directly from GW rather than buying from retailers like miniwargaming and chaosorcs superstore). Right now universities are on strike, maybe even til January 2013, and so I've finally found a full-time job (after 3 months of doign nothing cause there was no employement). I was going to finish my Protectorate of Menoth army at Warmachine, and since now I'm gonna do 400 - 440 $ a week, so I think it might be the right time to make a full-blown jump in the hobby. However, I see that some of the flaws of last summer still lurks around the game, mainly :

-Some unbalance in the game
-Chaos Space Maines still sucking (even more because of their FAQ)
-Marines still swarming over everythin
-GK still being ev erywhere

So I was like : Ok... What should I do now ? Should I :

A) Wait till 6th ed ? And do we even really know when it will be ?
B) Go WHFB (I like both settings) and go Warriors of Chaos ?
C) Try to start right now ?

If I try to start right now, what army should I try to begin. Some persons told me to start CSM like I intended last summer, but after looking over the previous edition of the Codices of the CSM and the present one, what I can see is that they tend to change drastically over the edition (and I don't want to buy stuff and then have something else in my hands). Plus, I kinda hate vehicules, more precisely transports, and I wouldn't want to have to buy so much of them (they make things so costly). I was wondering if I should go necron. After all, they have solid saves, good range, good AP values and are not marines.
What's your advice ?

Well here's the thing about Chaos Space Marines. Their codex was one of two (well, two and a White Dwarf Blood Angels codex) that followed this very simplified and overly streamlined method of armybuilding. Because of this, the change from the previous codex to that one was drastic, invalidated many units, and narrowed choices down to a bitter few. Every codex aside from that one and Dark Angels (the other follower of that trend) has tended to introduce more units, choices, and options with every release. In other words, if you were to start an army now, I doubt anything would be invalidated.

While there is unbalance in the game, it doesn't tend to be that bad. Grey Knights, Imperial Guard, Space Wolves, and Dark Eldar can run some absolutely murderous army builds, but as long as you don't plan on going to many tournaments you probably won't face them. Even so, I've seen precious few of these hyper-competitive builds in the tournaments I've attended.

Marines are everywhere, however, and that isn't really going to change. They're the big sellers and they get the most support. It's kind of chicken/egg there, but it's not changing much.

If you're looking to avoid vehicles, Chaos Marines might not be your best choice. Marine armies in general thrive in Rhinos and Land Raiders, since it can get these guys up close where they need to be. While I don't know a whole hell of a lot about Necrons, their new codex is rock solid and has been received very well. They've also got some insanely cool models coming out this month. If you want something that isn't Marines and still has a "bad guy" flavor, they would be a pretty good bet.

Switch to the new Necron army. They're pretty killy, they're still very cool, and you can still be the nastybad evil empire-things that Chaos pretends to.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

Necrons - Stereotypical Cartoon Villains who twirl their moustaches as they laugh.

Chaos - Evil because they're told to be.

Orks - Fight for survival and the right to rule.

And no matter what, every army will change with time, so if you want to start now, then do so. It's your choice.

Are those mustaches actually bits of wire? Or are they hyper-phasic threads of glowing green energy that serve purposes and functions beyond the ken of Man?

Well duh that's what they are anything else would just be silly

On the basis of what to start if Chaos is what appeals to you then go for it, yeah there are the rumours about the next codex but a good player will take a bad army and MAKE it work.

As chaos you have the benefit of (if rumours are correct) being one of the first 6th edition codices, so that should give them a sizeable boost in terms of power and competitiveness. Also, defilers and Obliterators are amongst the coolest units in the game.

40k Armies:
Alaitoc 9300 points
Chaos 15000 points
Speed Freeks 3850 points

WHFB Armies:
Lizardmen 1000 points

Marines are everywhere since GW's advertising focuses more heavily on them, that's not likely to change. Balance in the game is reasonable, you get an unbalanced picture by listening to people griping on the forums; if you read the Codexes there are very few useless units and no unbeatable tricks. Chaos isn't bad at the moment, it's not top-tier competitive but it can hold it's own in casual settings and friendlier tournaments.

Balanced Game: Noun. A game in which all options and choices are worth using.
