So this stituation came up yesterday, my tactical squad were locked in combat with a grey hunter and a rune priest. My lone terminator decides to charge in to help out. The rune priest kills 3 marines, and the Terminator squishes the grey hunter. Losing combat by 2 I took morale test on the terminator (who passed) I then chose to fail the morale on the tactical squad. I played it as because the terminator was holding the rune priest was locked in combat (so couldn't chase my marines) my opponent argued the rune priest being an I.C. is treated as a seperate unit for purposes of assault so should be able to try and catch the tactical marines. I said that while the I.C. is treated as a seperate unit for determining who hits who, in gaming terms I assaulted the unit (including the rune priest) and because the terminator passed his morale they counted as locked.

Just wanted to check I played it correctly (or if I played it wrong).
Cheers all.

Independent characters are only treated as a separate unit when attacks are resolved and become members of the same unit again when assault results are being determined (Rulebook, p49). As the Terminator charged the unit the RP had joined, he was therefore locked in combat with the whole unit - including the RP. The RP and Terminators are still locked, so he cannot attempt a Sweeping Advance against another unit that is falling back (p41).

As above. You have a single multiple combat, and you cannot SA unless every enemy unit is falling back /. dead.

The IC rules on p49 have nothing to do with this, as the RP is again a normal member of the unit when you calculate combat resolution, which is before breaktests / sweeping advance

Agreed, the sweeping advance can only occur if no enemy models are actively fighting.

In this situation, it doesn't matter if the IC is joined to the squad or not. As long as one unit does not flee from the multiple combat, the winning side may not SA. Page 40, main rulebook.
