Hey Dakka, so after reading helsreach (fantastic book btw) I've taken up the task of painting up some Black Templars. My issue here is the cost.

I'm not an avid gamer and take to more painting and modeling, so after buying the plastic command squad and a commander I've already spend more than I normally would for a project, but as I'm more into the fluff I want them to be as accurate as possible, which means tabards, robes and chains. The question is, is the upgrade box worth it? Or should I bite the bullet and up my green stuffing skills?

It's worth it. You can even use it for the whole army: just spread everything around and not make every marine use a BT Bolter, 2 BT shoulder pads, a BT head and a BT robe.

In my experience, I go for the upgrade kits. My GS skill is so bad that I couldn't even make rivets if I tried.

I bought a few DA upgrade sprues from GW when I started building my army and I think that the price was worth it. You could always look into getting the bits individually from the WarStore or Battlewagon.

I would check out the Dakka Swap Shop might be some people on there with BT bits you are in need of. Might save a few bucks and get just the stuff you need. All in all thought the upgrade box for the BTs is pretty awesome. Lots of great stuff in the box pretty much nothing would go unused.

Bulding up GS skills is never a bad idea, but the BT upgrade box is amazing. Not only for modeling but for gaming as well since it comes with 2 special weapons each, and some nice shoulder pads, some really nice heads, not to mention the bolters, pistols, and swords. It comes with multiple different tabards and some different bits full for the BT. It also has parts for LRs, rhinos (anything on a rhino chasis really) and dreads.

BT uses the Codex Astartes as toilet paper. They’re an Imp Fist successor, recruit from multiple planets, and are known to be the largest Chapter in the galaxy. They’re on a constant Crusade, keeping it real for the Emperor and not bumming around like the other guys. They hate psykers and can’t ally with them. They’re basically an entire chapter of Chaplains. CC lunatics. What every Space Marine should aspire to be, if not trapped in a Matt Ward nightmare.

I used one upgrade kit for a whole battleforce and it still made each marine unique in some way, shoulder pad, weapon each etc, should spread it out. Very worth it, but who's to say green stuff wouldn't also be good?

If you are just looking to get what you need them check out ebay. Window-box is where I got all my BT bits and practically every marine has 2 pads and and weapons and most have a tabard
