So it is entered into the Imperial record, that throughout a two day marathon of Perfect Strangers, Lion El'Jonson and Leman Russ traded knuckle sandwiches, and various finishing moves from the WWE. Neither of them gained the upper hand in this fight, which is apparently comedic to space vikings (or maybe it was cousin Balke's antics.) Thinking the fight over, Russ succumbs to a capital case of the giggles. Broody as lions are, El'Jonson socks him in the kisser, finally laying him out. Cue the rivalry.
So was this the logical conclusion of a bro-fight, or a cheap shot heard for thousands of fictional years?

Russ started it by punching Lion for killing a planetary governor or something that insulted Russ. Russ just has a glass jaw, Lion and the Emperor both punched him out.

*The Emperor used a power fist to punch him out. Personally, I'd find it admirable that he still had a head.
As for the Russ Lion fight, it would have been seen as justified by the Lion, and very well could have been. I'm not sure of how the fight started, but if Russ started it without just cause, he can't very well complain that the Lion finished it in the same way Russ started it.

As I recall, the fight started because of a battlefield "mishap". The Wolves and DA were fighting orks, and each force had their orders. The Angels veered of course for some reason I can't recall (though I believe it was justified), without bothering to tell the wolves. This resulted in the deaths of quite a few of Russ' boys. Russ belted El'Jonson after the battle was over.

Page 20 of the Dark Angels codex tells their side of the story. I read the Wolves side (which is what I referenced above) somewhere I can't recall. I didn't see it in their codex.
Also, it wasn't orks. My memory system is corrupted. It was the Tyrant Durath, and they only fought for a day and a night before Russ found humor in it, and Jonson did what he did.

The Dark Angels left the flank of the Wolves exposed causing many of them to be killed.
Russ starting the fight was acceptable as was the Lion's sucker punch.
They subsequently dueled every time they met eventually having a friendly rivalry.
The Lion's disappearance has been noted as a possible reason for Russ heading into the EoT as he did.

Leave it to the Space Woofs to go charging out into the Eye of Freaking Terror when the bro they're looking for is right under their noses. XD
On the other hand, were I the Lion, I totally wouldn't have hit Russ, but hey, I'm not Lion. I certainly don't blame him for it, though. Just wouldn't do that myself.

Was the Lion mentally challenged? I mean, before the whole Betrayal made him go depressed... I somehow always felt that he was one of the more sensible Primarch, but little fluff is developped on him. It's usually, ''he was prideful''... well hell, he brought civilization to an entire planet. I'd be freaking proud if I did that.

Damn, oh how I wish the 1st Legion actually had an interesting fluff... Honestly, they could pull out a ''Newcron move'', replace 90 pourcent of the fluff of the DA, and I'd be perfectly happy with it. As long as it's something... anything... other than 'dark' this and 'lion' that all over the place...

It does seem to be a recurring trait with the Lion...
Paraphrased from 'Savage Weapon.'
"Forgive me brother."
Kurze's sneer turned puzzled for just a moment.
"For that dishonourable blow."
Wedged through the back of the Night Lords Primarches armour, was a half foot of steel which had cut clean into his torso...

Now if he could wake up and teabag Lorgar, I'll marry him (assuming the DA have repealed Don't Ask Don't tell) He's even more likeable now that we know he's willing to put aside his honour to put down rabid dogs.

Dark Angels take everything seriously, the Lion punched out Leman Russ in anger and left. Both sides treat it as a slight on their honor (the Dark Angels that anyone picked a fight in the first place, the Space Wolves that the Lion ended the fight with a 'cheap shot', as it were), and have a history of getting in fights, to the point that they've organized ritual duels every time members of both Chapters are in the same place in order to avoid having to disrupt whatever mission they're on to beat the crap out of each other.

That was never the story. Basically, they were fighting some donkey-cave Tyrant, who insulted Russ and so Russ made an oath that he will take his head. So Russ starts throwing his dudes at the gates, howling for blood. The Lion, meanwhile, ignores his impressionable brother and continues along his existing methodical plan of attack (which has the side-effect of leaving the Wolves unsupported), and manages to kill the Tyrant first. The Wolves codex claims Russ was mad over his unnecessarily loses, but if we look at his characterization throughout the BL novels, he was just mad that the Lion made a liar out of him.

He didn't backstab him, he ran him through because he probably calculated that as being his only chance of victory. And he still got his ass kicked all over the place.
