Sorry, at the time I was on my phone and typing is a pain on that thing. What I meant to suggest was the fluff says that the bigger the ork, the greener and darker they become. I'm not sure of the steps you took, but my suggestion is to do the priming in white, and go devlan mud over the primer before anything else. I've always felt that with orks, the mud gives a more natural tone to the shadows. Over that, do your green as you please. I tend to use a wash or two of thraka green, layering further depending on the size of the ork. Boyz are relatively light, nobz noticeably darker, warbosses even more so, and Ghaz is a deep green. I've seen it the other way, where the green gets brighter and sharper as they get bigger, and that looks pretty sweet as well.
I realize that's not necessarily what you asked, just a further explanation of what I had intended to say earlier.
As to the question about the mud, I'd give it a full go all around. This serves two purposes; as stated earlier, it proves a blend between layers and a more natural shading to the hide of the ork. Second, it gives both the hide and the ork's equipment a good layer of grime. I don't think you'd get a very subtle effect by only leaving it in the recesses, unless you take the time to blend outward a bit.
I should add that getting a closer look at the pants and boots, I love the tones you have going on. It looks very natural.
