Looking for suggestions on a skirmish-style game using historicI’m looking for skirmish rules, preferably geared towards historic minis, that incorporates some Necromunda-esque RPG elements. From what I’ve read of A Song of Blades and Heroes it sounds like maybe this an option, but I’m not sure how deep the campaign element of the game is?al miniatures preferably - 28mm up to 10 a side.

You could use Mordheim, I'm pretty sure I've seen historical ports of the game.

There is LOTR SBG, I've also seen historical versions (vikings and saxons).

I'm waiting for a copy of Muskets and Tomahawks, from the company that does SAGA. Its skirmish in the French and Indian War, and I don't think it has a campaign element.

Oh, and you might also want to ask a MOD to move this to the historicals subforum, might get more views from people who might know. There is also The Miniatures Page (TMP) which is a wealth of knowledge about such things.

I'm from the future. The future of space

I know that later Songs of Blades & Heroes publications have campaign rules.

I'd definitely recommend asking/searching on The Miniatures Page.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.

Moving thread to RPG Games.

You could use D&D or something like that, and drop all the elements of magic.

If you want something that incorporates Morale, the Savage Worlds system allows for all sorts of add-on characters and troops to be included and have morale rules.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

The closest you're going to get to a historical skirmish game with Necromunda-like elements would be the GW Historicals games. Specifically, Legends of the Old West, Legends of the High Seas, and Gladiator.

All three are based on the Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game rules, so if you don't like those, beware (but I think it's a pretty solid system for this sort of thing). They all have "warband" type rules, where your team can gain skills, stat increases, and new gear as a campaign goes on. The system is a little more like Mordheim than Necromunda, in the sense that there is a difference between Heroes and Henchmen, but if you've played either you get the idea.

If you don't care about the RPG elements, then there are lots of other options - Havoc, Song of Blades and Heroes, and loads of other free and commercial skirmish rules. But if you want the RPG elements, then the three I mentioned are the only ones that really incorporate that.

Recommend Song of Blades and Heroes and Mordheim. Mordheim is a nice choice as it's a solid ruleset with a bit more depth than SBH and it might be easier to find opponents.

That said, my top choice is the SBH system. I've played it alot and I love the fast play and the unique activation system. The speed of play means that you can play out a few encounters in one evening. If you want something medieval historical, you should look at the "Song of Arthur and Merlin."

Formerly a supplement, it now includes all the core game rules and is a stand alone game, though it is compatible with the other SBH products/games. It has scenario and campaign tracks as well as 3 variant settings depending wether you want Hollywood fantasy, Welsh legend or Historical(no magic).

Though aimed at creating a narrative, progressing campaign, it's still not a true RPG. If you want to do some strait roleplaying you may want to incorporate sessions of "Tales of Blades and Heroes" between games

It's a pen and paper RPG that operates off the SBH rules engine. There's also a GM guide.

I don't have any experience with the RPG, but if you've got any questions about SBH, ask away!

A alternative could be Brushfire. While its models are animals, its rules are fairly historical and non magic. I have not read the rules though, so this is only based on what others have written.

EDIT: Cutlass! could be a possibility too. Just look past the fantasy pirates, which could easily be some other types of humans.
