Ok, so bought some models today (still waiting on the Free People's book, so my numbers might be wrong) and with the help of a friend that showed me the points and such, came up with a starter list, using the models I bought. Here's what I got.

Gimli
Elven Cloak

6 Khazad Guard

Balin

12 Dwarf Rangers
6 Two Handed Weapons
12 Throwing Axes

Dwarf King
Two Handed Weapon, Throwing Axe

12 Dwarf Rangers
6 Two Handed Weapons
12 Throwing Axes

If my math is correct, this is 583 points. Might have to either trim it down a LOT or boost it up a little for 600.

Now for questions. First, what do you think? Any good? Reason I'm using the Rangers is mostly because I found a 24 man box for cheap and snagged it. They can be used as regular Dwarf Warriors (friends really don't care) without too much trouble. Also, can you take Throwing Axes WITH Two Handers? I know Gimli does, but hey, he's Gimli. Also, are Throwing Axes worth all those points? Or should I limit it to just a few? And are bows truly worth it? Strength 2 is pretty lame, and by the look of it, the scenarios are pretty tight together so they might not be able to shoot much...

Lastly, and I'm sure I can figure this out once I get the Free People's book, but, how best (or can I at all) add Hobbits and/or Ents to this list? Them, along with Dwarves, are my favorite things from LotR and I would like to use them all together. Possible? Worth it?

Staying on target.....

It's a good base for sure but if you want hobbits, time for a re-jig. You want all your bowmen to be hobbits. Why? Because then they only cost you about 50pts a dozen and that means more dwarves for combat. Do bear in mind you can only have 33% of your models (excl. heroes) armed with bows. This also presents a problem in that only 33% of a faction may have bows so you need 3 dozen hobbits to make them worth it in theory and that is a lot of money and the combat hobbits........suck, sorry

Dwarf rangers are cool and definitely will come in handy with their throwing weapons and higher shoot value though in the end with hobbit archers about I would swap them all out for Dwarven warriors personally.

The Khazad Guard you get a high five for.

The heroes a pretty solid too, so for now starting out you needn't worry, they will see you right.

Ents cost a pretty penny both on and off the field so be prepared to make sacrifices to include one.

Let us know how you get on

Alright, sounds good. Well, with Hobbits being Metal, they might not make it in any time soon. And probably only a bit anyways. Might sneak in a Hobbit hero though once in a while, just for kicks. XD

So, Rangers seem good? I kinda liked the idea of a bit different route for Dwarfs, but regular Dwarf warriors will probably be in the future just so I have my bases covered.

Would Iron Guard be worth it instead of the Khazad Guard? I know they have less defense, but it's still a resonable 6, and 2 attacks seems great for actually WINNING combat. Thoughts?

Also, would Ents be redundant in this list? I assume they're tough and hard to kill. And I also would probably only be using them for big games anyways, to counter the possible big monsters like Mumakil and Balrogs

Thanks for the advice! Hope to get some games in soon.
