Do they work for the listed initive or can you modified ones like banshee masks or halberds/furious charge? Do models with I1 due to power fist almost always fail in these cases?
Also, does the wording mean that in every assault phase or just the turn the librarian assaulted? *i.e. works on subsequent phases if locked in combat or the enemy's assault phase too?*

They are used on both turns. Characteristic tests are on page 8 of the brb.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Power fists do not change your initiative stat to 1, they simply strike at initiative 1.
Halberds are similar, they strike at +2 initiative not modify the initiative stat.
Can't say for banshee masks, I don't have a copy of the codex to look it up in.

(Paraphrasing here) models with banshee masks has Initiative 10 in the turn it charges. There is a bit more in there, but not pertinent to this query.

Those examples no. However, a model in base contact with a Nid with Lash Whip would. The ruling for LW is that a model in B2B has its Int reduced to 1 untill the end of the assault phase.

It seems like the banshee masks the necron wraiths with coils and the tyranid lash whips would all make a difference on the test, but it anything that only modifies what initiative the model strikes at would not. so power fists, thunder hammers, grey knights halbreds would not affect the test.

Ahh thank you for pointing that out. I just then realized that psychotrope grenades would then fall into this category and you would be reduced to I1. (provided you rolled a 5)
As it is possible to have both be active at the same time, do you take the grenade first then the brain mines or vice versa?

Since they happen at the same time, i would argue that they would use their normal Initiative. But that's partly because I don't like Grey Knights.

Since they resolve at the same time I would agree with happyjew(not for the stated reason) that they would not have their initiative dropped at the time they needed to do the test.

Hey, I didn't see that was the ONLY reason. Just part of it. I like my Eldar and my Nids. I also like Orks (even though I don't play them). The only armies I really dislike are BA, BT, DA, and SW. However, I do try to remain unbiased in these discussions.
