Hi everyone,

I'm Mike and I've just started painting miniatures again after a break of about 15 years. I was only about 13 when I was last into wargaming and things seem to have changed quite a lot so I;m feeling a bit lost!

I decided to buy a tactical marine squad and paint them as Ultramarines because I didn't think these would be too difficult. I bought these models to practice on and have nearly finished them so I've now got to decide what army to start collecting. I'm not even sure yet whether I'll collect Warhammer or Warhammer 40k but I am sure that I've got a lot to learn which is why I've joined!

I've also started a YouTube channel where I'll be posting stuff through the eyes of a beginner so feel free to check it out at www.youtube.com/user/MelkorPainting

See you around,

Mike

Welcome to Dakka dude. You're probably aware that the new rules for 40k, the much talked about 6th edition, will be out in the next few months (if the rumour thread is anything to go by. So you've probably jumped back in at the right time.

Dakka is a great forum and you'll find loads of cool stuff here. Like "ahem" the narrative campaign weekend I'm organising in Mansfield in December. everybody is welcome to attend newbies and vets so feel free to check the link to my thread.

Hi, welcome to Dakka!

@Geordie09. I'll definately check out the narrative campaign thread. If I'm back in Sheffield over that time there's no reason why I can't make it. It's just all up in the air at the minute on whether I go to university or not, but will let you know.

Hi and welcome to Dakka!

Astra Militarum
Iron Warriors Army: Enyo Company
Enyo (Greek: Ενυώ, English translation: "warlike" in Greek mythology; Roman: Bellona), was an ancient goddess of war, acting as a counterpart and companion to the war god Ares. She is also identified as his sister, and daughter of Zeus and Hera in a role closely resembling that of Eris; with Homer in particular representing the two as the same goddess. As goddess of war, Enyo is responsible for orchestrating the destruction of cities

Hi,

Welcome to Dakka

I wasn't aware of this so thanks for letting me know. Do you think it would be better to wait for the new rules to be released before buying a Codex?

Not necessarily. It would depend on the codex. Rumour mongers insist that Dark Angels, Chaos and possibly Tau will be updated soon. Time scales vary but were talking within the next year and a half.

Imperial Guard codex is round about three and a half years old, and the following have all been updated after this: Tyranids, Space Wolves, Blood Angels, Necrons, Dark Angel, Grey Knights. Buying any of these will give you plenty of longevity in the codex regardless of the new rule set.

Space Marines and Orks may get redone within a few years but you can't go wrong with them as I wouldn't imagine they'll alter too much.

Eldar are due an update and Black Templars are really old.

This advice is from the point of purchasing something you won't necessarily use alot. If you want to collect Eldar for instance, I'd say go for it but do'nt necessarily by the codex from GW, see if you can get it on ebay for cheap!

The important thing is that you paint and play with something you feel you'll enjoy and will satisfy what you want from the hobby. People will try to tell you that this force is better than that or you shouldn't get this or that because its not effective. I'd tell them to do one. Start what you want, use what you want. Its all about enjoying the hobby, not keeping up with the jones's!
