Jealous that Horus is Warmaster

So I started to paint a squad of imperial guardsmen, but I keep messing up the eyes, how do I do them

Usually what I do is lay down the base coat of a dark flesh tone, then use a black or brown wash. After it has dried, highlight as normal, leaving the eye sockets dark. Painting the eyes at that scale is pointless IMO, as if you look at a real head that size you can't see the whites of the eyes, just shadow.

Alternatively, you can dot with white, then shape the eye by touching up with the dark flesh tone.

I paint the face with my darker brown color, then I fill in the eye area with a line of white. Then I put down a perpendicular thin line of black down the middle of the white line in a + shape. Don't worry about getting white or black outside of the eye.

Once that's done, I go back in and touch up the corners of the eyes with my dark brown and then paint the flesh color on. The flesh color totally obscures wherever white or black went out of the eye socket.

Dont' forget to add the eyebrows!

Agreed, have a look at similar sized photos of people, especially outside (them, not you ) - the whites of eyes really aren't that visible.

Because they will be so many guardmen on the table I would sugest you just put a dark brown wash in the eye recess & leave it at that.
I hardly ever paint eyes anymore.

Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

If you're going to paint dozens of guardsmen, leave the eyes unpainted.... its not worth it.

And @Ailaros: How'd you paint the stubble on that guy?? I need to know!

LOOK!! a shameless self-promotion! (gasp!)
