Which is a better choice for a Chaos list Defiler or a Possessed Vindicator?

Well that depends. If the rest of your army is a mobile style list, like say a Rhino/Land Raider rush Khorne army then the Vindicator is better because it can keep up with the rest of your vehicles and also supply an armor 13 front armor to maybe help shield some stuff. In a shooty army I would definetly go Defiler as your army isn't designed to move so having the Battle Cannon off the Defiler would be much better.

A good shooty army should be very mobile, as for the vindicator vs defiler, i prefere vindi. It's and long ranged S8 AP3 and good combat vs S10 AP2 and better armour.

All are true but as soon as the opposing player sees where that vindi is going you now find 8 las cannons breathing right down your neck and there you go wasting more points I personally use Defilers as arty until my inf can take care of most anti armor then they are pretty much good to go

Yo will find they will both attaract obscene amount of firepower. The Vindi because it can be lethal, the Defiler because it looks scrarier than it actually is (IMHO).

but sayign that they can both be worth taking, if your enemy is busying himself killign your vindi he might not notice the rhino full of melta-chosen rolling down the side fo the table.

The Defiler is also a giant model, so it's chances of getting cover are slim. You can hide a vindicator if the need arises, but a Defiler...

As others have mentioned the compostion of your army is the key. If you run a footslogging army like my death guard the defilers are great as they keep pace and provide a BIG distraction. As with most things they are better taken in groups of at least 2. With our current codex we are pretty outdated as far as options to be considered competitive so that's another bit of info best included. If you are making a tournament list then recommendations will be different than fun lists. Personally out of the two you can't go wrong in my list. For m death guard I use defilers, for my iron warriors vindicators. Play style means the world of difference.

I'd say that doesn't make much sense since they both only move 6" and shoot. The defiler can also run and assault so can actually move faster than the vindi.

Defiler is a much better all around model. As an anti-infantry gun it is better than the vindi giving you much more range. As a dread it is a little weak vs other dreads but chews up infantry a little better with the 4 extra attacks. For me the defiler is an auto include, the vindi is just used as an extra rhino by taking the gun off.

The vindicator shines against TEQ and vehicles, but must expose itself to do so. That 24" range just makes it very difficult to use. Most things can drive/run away from it faster than it can move and shoot. So you have to try to keep it in the center of the field. And all that does is expose its side or rear armor easier.
