So, I might pick up the rulebook this weekend.

Anyone that's played it know what else I might need to get? I want 2 even sized armies for Axis & Allies so I can run some games for my friends and hopefully get them into it too.

So far, I have the contents of the original Dust Tactics starter set, plus 1 command squad for both. I was going to get the DW rulebook + the DT revised starter set, and later possibly 1 heavy walker for each as well.

Is that enough? Or will I find I need way more troops as I start playing? Money is tight so I don't want to invest a whole lot in models I probably won't use in the long run.

More the enough. The OCB + Command Squad is enough to start, really. With the RCB you should have enough for 3 small platoons per side. Thats 1 command and 2 units each, plus any walkers you can fit in.

Peter: As we all know, Christmas is that mystical time of year when the ghost of Jesus rises from the grave to feast on the flesh of the living! So we all sing Christmas Carols to lull him back to sleep.
Bob: Outrageous, How dare he say such blasphemy. I've got to do something.
Man #1: Bob, there's nothing you can do.
Bob: Well, I guess I'll just have to develop a sense of humor.

OK cool. I'll go for the rules plus revised starter to add on to what I already have and then take it from there

Does each platoon need a command squad or can I use my sigrid and Joe to lead platoons? I know I heard characters can but not sure if all of them can. Need to know before I order. Thanks.

A command squad or a hero must lead. So Joe can. Other then some upgrade option it seem to be the only way to get hero, likely so we don't field all hero platoons.

Picked up the revised starter box today, and the DW book. Out of everything I just ended up with a whole 2 bendy guns. Both starters together make for what looks like a nice sized army.

Now I just gotta talk my GW lovin friends to give it a shot

If you read the table that lists how many platoons can be taken for a given points it also lists maximum heroes. I assume the rules mean that heroes are typically taken outside of platoons and the platoon upgrade just boosts the number from the chart by 1.

Personally though, I wouldn't take Joe if I have other options available. He's rather undergunned, and the only benefit he gets besides the standard hero rules are a free order per command phase. Command squad has more firepower, a radioman, a medic, and a mechanic. Radiomen are massively important since they let you issue an order to a unit outside command radius.

Hopefully they'll rerelease minis in individual boxes soon. Having to buy a new RCB to run a second Assault Platoon would be a pain in the neck, and most of the really good heroes are in expensive Tactics expansions with no real other value to Warfare players.

Joe's not bad when you consider his grenade launcher means all attacks from his unit ignor cover at 12". Combining weapon abilities with different squads gives some great options.

Remember that Lara and Rhino from the RCB can also lead platoons. Although Command Squads are great since they also give you one more free command a turn.
