Hi, so I just wanted some opinions on my next decision. I've just recently finished purchasing what was needed to complete my Protectorate of Menoth army at Warmachine, and then I told myself : Okay dude, time to fullfill your life-long dream of having your own GW army. Then I asked myself : But should it be W40k or WHFB ? I checked some battle reports, read some stuff, codex, army, made price listing etc. My conclusions are as follow :

W40k is more fast paced, but WHFB is more structured in terms of rules.
Both games have their lot of randomness (ex : lore of magic, armour saves).
W40k and WHFB have both fluff I like (but W40k has an edge since it is darker)
WHFB armies seem to be more balanced, compared to those of W40k (MeQ, GK, Matt Ward, etc.)
WHFB seems to be cheaper since it lacks vehicules

Since I always try to take the cheapest option when confronted by a dilema, I think I should take WHFB. The reason is because it lacks vehicules, it won't suffer as much as W40k when their price will rise (and we all know that they will in time).
Plus, I'm a big Chaos fan and it seems it will keep an edge in FB, even when the new WoC army book will get out (if the rumours can be trusted)
CSM however seems to be on the downfall.
And to conclude, I really like footslogging

So do you think I'm making the right choice ? (starting a WHFB army rather than a W40K one)

Honestly, I'd probably wait a couple of months and see what the new edition of 40K looks like. It might be the bees knees. If it's not, Fantasy isn't going anywhere.

Are you really sure you're done with Menoth though? Aren't Colossals coming out in a couple of months.......

8th Edition Fantasy is garbage, go with 40K. If Fantasy was still in 7th, I'd recommend Fantasy instead, but 8th is, IMO, terrible.

In the dark recesses of your mind...

Another thing to consider is what the 40k and Fantasy communities are like in your area. I'd choose the group that has the most active players/tournaments. I think it is a misbelief that WHFB os less expensive than 40k. You say it is because of a lack of vehicles, but in fantasy you use two or three times as many models unless you're playing ogres.

Your points seem legit. I was mostly comparing cost to make a WoC and a CSM 1000 pts list. The WoC came to 94 $ while the CSM was 110+. But I will try to wait till 6th ed and the next CSM codex (hell, been a almost a year waitng for these two things).

I'm from the future. The future of space

Definitley wait until the new edition comes out.

I'd go by model choices. Which do you like better? I personally think WoC look way, way cooler than CSM.

Or you could make a warmchine army out of GW models.

Chaos lord with a two handed weapon of some sort on a 30mm base = epic vlad

Chaos Knights on 50mm bases = Iron Fang Uhlans

Chaos Warriors with shields and custom halberds (or bitz order the knight lances off ebay) = Iron Fang Pikemen

Chaos Champion on Steed = Markhov

Ungors with mixed weapons = Kossite Woodsmen

3 Bestigors converted up to be awesome = Great Bears

Well. It's something I've wanted to do for a while. I already did a eButcher tier list demon army with Bloodletters as Doom Reavers, a Bloodcrusher for Fenris, chaos up khador jacks and beastmen for manhunters. I really need to finish painting it before I get more miniatures though.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.

Play Daemons and play both systems for the price of one!

2012- stopped caring
Nova Open 2011- Orks 8th Seed---(I see a trend)
Adepticon 2011- Mike H. Orks 8th Seed (This was the WTF list of the Final 16)
Adepticon 2011- Combat Patrol Best General

Both systems have their good and bad sides,
you've gotten off to a good start by looking into the gaming side of both, now Id suggest looking a little deeper into the fluff and models, see if anything springs out at you,
The reason I started beastmen for fantasy was the new minotaur models, some people hate them with a passion but I like 'em.

"i just met you, and this is crazy,
but heres my number, so call me baby."

"erm..... no"
