Been Around the Block

Hey there, friendly gamer here. I've yet to enter a store to play as I've got quite a few friends who have their armies or borrow one of mine for a game. I am not at all a "MAKE THE BEST LIST EVER" or a fan of boring "Spam vets or other boring units." We don't need to be top tier competitive.

However, my guard seem to be losing lately. Back in the day I had no trouble, but against my girlfriend's necrons, we had a campaign of 5 games that I only won one. Now, she is pretty good and necrons are strong, but I don't know if maybe I'm not making a good list. My newer friend just got into space wolves and is already starting to get heavy into the power houses that are longfangs and thunderwolf cavalry, so I think I need to step up my game a bit.

So I'll throw my entire army selection at you, and you make what you can of it, 1500, 1750, 2000 whatever. Realize that I've got a lot of units that are obviously not particulary good like ratlings, but I usually don't use them in games. I generally understand what's bad and what's good through extensive dakka'ing.

HQ
Commissar Yarrick
Primaris Psyker

Company Command Squad. 3 plasma guns, plasma commander, 1 medic (I know medic isn't exactly optimal but I bought the model and feel like using it)

Elites
Stormtroopers. Usually just 5 with meltagun, plasmagun. Would love 2 meltas, but that's what I got for now. Maybe I should just proxy it.
5 Ratlings.
Marbo. Love him!

Fast Attack
Rough Riders. 5 of them, not often taken but surprisingly good and fun.
Scout SentinelAutocannon. Love the model. Hit or miss really.
Vendetta with lascannons
Valkyrie with the aoe rockets

Heavy Support
Leman Russ Demolisher
Leman Russ Battle Tank
Leman Russ Battle Tank
Leman Russ Executioner
Manticore

Transports
3 Chimeras, two with multilasers, 1 with heavy flamer turret

Troops
Penal Legionairres
Veteran Squad. 3 Meltaguns, demolitions. Not sure how much I like demolitions
Veteran Squad. 3 flamers, shotguns, carapace armor. Fluffy, bought on ebay and the models are sweet. Not taken except in fluffy games
Infantry Squad. 3 with grenade launchers, power weapons, blobbed with commissar and power weapon.
Infantry squad. 2 with grenade launchers, missile launchers. Blobbed with commissar
Infantry squad. 2 with flamers. Not blobbed, catachans running around
Infantry squad, 1 with grenade launcher, heavy bolter.
Platoon Command squad with 3 flamers, 1 heavy flamer
Platoon Command Squad with 4 grenade launchers. Was formerly 4 snipers but that obviously sucked, recently changed to grenades, only weapon choice available.
heavy weapon squad, 3 autocannons
heavy weapon squad, 3 mortors

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi there!

Well what you could do is perhaps go for a hybrid type list as you have a mix of both infantry, transports and heavy support (and the fact you said you are not a fan of vet spam but correct me if I am wrong) so perhaps run three chimera's with your veterans and CCS? Provide meltaguns to both veteran squads though and add the primaris pysker to one of the chimera transports (perhaps the CCS or one of the veteran squads). Then what you could do is form a solid fire base with your infantry with missile launchers (AC and GL are worth considering) and combined with the manticore could in theory protect objectives in your deployment zone. Or perhaps use your Leman Russ Tanks as a fire base with the infantry instead of the manitcore or just use all three! Therefore, you get 5 large blast templates if you roll well for the manticore....Your chimera transports go for objectives in your opponent's deployment zone. Also, as a counter charge unit, your infantry (catachans) armed with power weapons etc as well as a commissar (blobbed as well if you can) could provide a good base for bubble wrapping enemies but also buying time for your other units, penal legionairres could do the same or just run around the table disrupting enemy fire. Ideally, having a second CCS with your firebase is very useful to take advantage of the order system such as BRING IT DOWN AND FRRSRF.

You may have to buy some more models here and there but I hope this provides you some food for thought for forming a list.

P.S: In my 1500 point list I use three platoons (two fire base units and one power blob) with two Leman Russ Tanks as an anchor for the firebase but still need to test it out, I go mainly for foot lists though.
Post a list if you could and we could then take it from there.

Hope this is of help.
