A survey of more than 9,100 servicemen discloses that almost one in five military personnel has been refused service in pubs, hotels and shops because they were in uniform.
Six per cent have been attacked in the street, while 21 per cent have reported strangers coming up to them and shouting abuse.
In one case, a member of the Royal Navy was told by his son’s head teacher to stop wearing his uniform on the school run because it “upset the parents”.
A female RAF recruiter said that on more than one occasion members of the public have screamed “baby killer” at her as she walked to work in her uniform.
The study also discloses how servicemen and women face discrimination such as being refused mortgages and even mobile phone contracts as a result of being in the Armed Forces.

I have, but then again I'm quite involved in such things. Nothing massively extreme though.
Generally the problem seems to be that people see no difference between government policy and the actions of the Armed Forces, as if it's the Armed Forces who decide where to go and who to fight.

Britons dont hate servicemen, Islamic fanatics and PC smegheads hate servicemen.

I know a Flight sergerant in the RAF who has young children educted in a Birmingham inner city school. When it came to the childrens 'bring a parent to school day' his kids were not allowed to include him in case it caused 'offense'. there were several other affront and open rejections of these childrens parentla relationship by the teaching staff. The teachers at this school weren't islamic, though several of the kids were, no the teachers were the up-their-own-arse multi-culturalists who believe that multi-culturalism is synonymous with pandering to any amount of intolerance if sourced or perceived to be from an ethnic subculture.

It is sickening enough when servicemen are mistreated by these idiots, but they also take it out on their kids. Being told they your dad is in an unwanted profession, that he cannot come to school on parents days like the other parents and the kids cannot even present what they did with daddy, or what daddy does to their classmates.
You would expect that with the think-of-the-children mentality so prevalent amongst these people they might recognise that what they are doing is damaging.

Now maybe. A few years ago it was different. Arguably there wasn't so much hate as complete ignorance. Now there's still ignorance about the job and the realities, but people at least respect the parades and uniform generally.

Well the numbers given were "one in 5", "6 percent", and "21 percent" which means that 4 in 5, 94 percent, and 79 percent of service men and women get along fine. So it seems more like you crazy guys are A- OK with solders.

0.o I know that their are a lot of stupid people in the world, but it takes a special kind of idioacys to walk up to a group of burly, shaven haired men in camoflage and give them abuse...

British soldiers are supposed to be some of the most well respected servicemen out there. If they're spending their time abroad building up good relations with the foreign populations of the countries that they're fighting in (instead of shooting them....), I'd think people would have the respect to clam their mouths and give the guys a bit of rest when they get home. =/

....But yeah, a tabloid sprouting nonsence figures as usual in the hope of spurring up a responce to get their reader's doing a bit more page turning. =P

Telegraph's not a tabloid But it is right leaning.
Depends what the situation is. Not everyone's burly, and we'd get in trouble for thumping someone, however justified
My brother did get someone come up to him and shake his hand when he was in uniform just after he returned from the 'ghan. I've always lived in areas with quite high numbers of service personnel, so I suspect my experience is skewed.

I suspect two-three years after Afghanistan ends people will lapse into ignorance again. Traditionally no-one cares about the British Armed Forces until they're needed, hence how long it's taken to get all the public support going.

O it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy, go away";
But it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play,
The band begins to play, my boys, the band begins to play,
O it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins", when the band begins to play.

I went into a theatre as sober as could be,
They gave a drunk civilian room, but 'adn't none for me;
They sent me to the gallery or round the music-'alls,
But when it comes to fightin', Lord! they'll shove me in the stalls!

We'll wait for extry rations if you treat us rational.
Don't mess about the cook-room slops, but prove it to our face
The Widow's Uniform is not the soldier-man's disgrace.
For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Chuck him out, the brute!"
But it's "Saviour of 'is country" when the guns begin to shoot;
An' it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' anything you please;
An' Tommy ain't a bloomin' fool -- you bet that Tommy sees!

It's easier to blame the soldiers than it is the electorate that made it happen since the electorate are the ones that feel like they've been slighted.

The British electorate was overwhelmingly against the Iraq war (biggest public marches in history) and has a right to feel slighted about it. That doesn't mean the public is against the armed forces, though.

The survey doesn't cover the proportion of the public who strongly support the armed forces. I bet it's as many or more than "hate" them.

I know loads of blokes who have been refused service and abused.

Never by a white woman or man though.

We are arming Syrian rebels who support ISIS, who is fighting Iran, who is fighting Iraq who we also support against ISIS, while fighting Kurds who we support while they are fighting Syrian rebels.

I don't know of anyone who has been refused service due to being in uniform. I have never actually asked anyone mind you but thats exactly the type of thing that squaddies would bitch about so I am sure that I would have heard about it.

You should be refused service in a pub if your in unifrom though, its against Queen's regs

In my experience we Brits have a great respect for all our armed forces, however we tend to backlash at anything we feel forced into thinking, such as the unflinching reverence we are told we should feel. These current wars have been going on long enough now that no soldier (barring a full 23 yearer) can claim they were forced to go to the middle east, they knew what they were signing up for. We also hear about some of things our soldiers have gotten up to with prisoners and it's unjustifiable, and people have had to deal with thick, meat head, idiot squaddies throwing their weight around in our town centres, both of these are an infinitesimally small minority, but a bad apple spoils the bunch. I think instead of worrying about what the general populous thinks we should be dealing with the massive amounts of ptsd, alcoholism, homelessness and other issues that haunt those that have served their country.
