Well for gk I feel that a venerable dread is to much of a point sink, however, if you want to fill up your HS slots up with something else, such as dreadknigt or a landraider, then you would have to take a ven dread. Internet wisdom says that you need to take psyfleman to be competitive in grey knights, for some long range AT.
Not to sure on vanilla marines so cant comment on them sorry

Box content wise go for the venerable one. On the other hand, the venerable upgrade is rather expensive game wise. I'd only use it for a Dread going close and personal (say by a Drop Pod).

Venerables are nice for when you want a weapon that isn't TL. The extra WS also means any WS 4 model you encounter will be hit on a 3+, and inversely any WS 5 model will only hit you on a 4+. As for the venerable rule, its useful if the damage result is a wreck/explode; its possible to salvage the death to be something less final.
The question really, is if its worth 60 points. Personally? I say yes if combined with footslogging marines, like SW. Not so great with Tacticals though.

Always buy the veni kit.
Gamewise, I prefer the veni IF you can fit him in. him in a drop pod can mess some stuff up, if used right. and it can cheat death a lot, which is a much better advatage that it sounds

Any time you've got 60 points spare, then sure. The question is, though, why do you have so many spare points?
With a little more forethought in list building, you're more likely to have too few points left over, or enough to just buy another dread.
Though I do gotta say, a BS5 assault cannon flopping out of a drop pod is pretty sexy.

I'd buy the Venerable Kit simply because it looks cooler and most people really won't care if you use the Venerable Dreadnought as a normal Dreadnought. They all are the same essentially considering that the "Dreadnought" kits on forgeworld look almost identical to the Venerable Kit but with different options.

+1. I've seen so many crazy looking custom dreads that are fielded as normal dreads, Venerable seems to be just a status you slap on a dreadnought. The venerable kit has more options, looks nicer and will give you a bunch of extra bits to use in your army. Also, since you are collecting GK, I think it looks better than the vanilla dread when painted up and accessorized for GK (Thats just a personal aesthetic choice though!)

Yes, always buy the Ven dread kit unless you want a missile launcher arm. Not that the launcher is good, but i use mine to convert them into autocannons.
