Or Star Wars: The Old Republic, if you insist.

What do you all think of it? I was very cynical about this game and thought it would be a pathetic, steaming pile of Bantha fodder, but I waslesantly surprised while playing a 7 day free trial courtesy of a RL friend.

I made a super evil mercenary and the obligatory sickeningly good-hearted Jedi knight and got both to lvl 10-15. The mercenary was by far more powerful and easy to play, and more fun. I was actually shocked at how evil this game let you be. I was able to do some seriously monstrous acts of unrestrained evil!

The Jedi character felt less powerful and more restricted in course of action (naturally). I was also really, really disappointed by how wimpy the light saber was when I finally got one. I figured it would be this way, but it was a real let down. Maybe they increase in power later?

The most fun I had with this game was grouping with my RL friend and doing quests together. The way the game let everyone in the group participate in the storyline and dialogue was great! We had loads of fun with that, and once we recruited a 3rd player everything was easy.

The game seems to encourage solo play in a MMO, which is bizarre since its an MMO. But as a veteran of these games, I fully understand the frustrations of trying to find a group at any given time. You just want to play, not wait for hours on end. That was EverQuest and no one has time for that crap these days.

Overall fun game initially and might be worth playing for a month

I honestly think the Jedi Knights/Sith Warriors are underpowered (Juggernauts and Guardians) or so complex to play their OPness isn't much of a problem (Marauders and Senteniels). Not a fan of their myself. I roll Inquisitor all the way.

TOR is fun, and worth a purchase and maybe a 3 month subscription. But after that, you've done everything worth doing. Their crafting system is broken at higher levels, their PVP lackluster, and the flashpoints i.e. dungeons not very imaginative.

Play TOR is you love Star Wars. Otherwise stick with WoW or do what I'm doing.

Waiting for Guild Wars 2.

Still waiting.

Someone I knew who got it at launch says its really boring now

Too many MMOs these days easily suffer from "New MMO smell"

After 3-5 months, it can wear off. That wouldnt be so bad, as many games cannot be that fun all the time, but with paid subscriptions its like using up more money in lieu of other games. I mean no offense to MMO makers but I'll just stick to F2P ones since imo theres not too much of a difference. Besides the companies being korean and stuff.....

I actually think TOR is only 50% MMO - it feels more like KotOR III with optional multiplayer support. And its storylines definitively set it apart from the other games, not just because they are fully voiced and animated. At least *I* am not used to actually being able to influence the way a questline develops or solve a mission in alternate ways. In my opinion, this also makes multiple "playthroughs" more viable, for even if you're visiting the same zone with another class (outside of the separate class quests), you can still have a unique experience by simply solving a problem in a different way. I've purposely created my characters with varying personalities, and it works quite well so far.

Apart from all the slapstick in the Smuggler story, I still think the funniest way I solved an issue was when my character - a female Twi'lek freighter captain with a sorta Indiana Jones'ish behaviour and appearance (minus the hat) - encountered a Sith who was about to kill her if she didn't give up the secret location of a McGuffin. The smuggler, valueing her own hide above anything else, did not have much of a problem complying with this request and feigning alliance. But when a Jedi who hunted the Sith turned up next, she happily went: "Yeah she's gone thataway". Cue a funny encounter between the two Force-users right in front of the treasure, and my smuggler standing ready to cash in once the dust settles.

My most epic experience so far was with my Sith Marauder, though. My Agent, on the other hand, had a story filled with suspense and twists, at times reminding me of a mixture between Casablanca and James Bond.

I'm not just enjoying the stories or occasional roleplaying, though. For me, PvP is fun as well. Especially with my Smuggler (good healer who isn't afraid to get in close and kick some butt) or my Agent (nasty sniper who prefers to strike from afar), but after some rather frustrating initial experiences I even managed to come up with a viable way to play my Marauder in the warzones.

As with most multiplayer games, however, TOR works best when you have a couple buddies to game with, but this is something the Cave Dweller already mentioned.

I for one do not play it every day, though this is largely influenced by me simply lacking the time. Still, I don't see myself cancelling my sub for another couple months so far. The recent patches have also done much for the game, and considering what more is currently in the works ...

You have to ask yourself one question, really.

Do you like Star Wars?

Yes? Play it

No? Don't.

It has a lot of problems, but the leveling process is the best I've ever played. The engine is gak, however, and that will come to haunt in in the future.
