Ok, so,
I have a Necron Army, and about 3 months ago I got 3 Tomb Spiders (metal), that were already assembled, 2 with the cannon thing, and 1 with twin assembly claws.
Painted em up, but haven't had a chance to use them in game.
I JUST aquired 3 more, metal Spiders, unbuilt with the parts to build more cannons and more twin claws.
My thought was to build one more cannon spider, and run 3 cannon in a unit, and then two with twin claws, and use those as a seperate unit.
Has anyone mixed and matched cannons and claws?
I am planning and working towards a scarab farm.. are cannon spiders do-able in that sort of build?
(stuck at work, no access to codex to help with this ... )

The guns are expensive, and the spyders need to run in order to better keep up with the scarabs.
Rumor has it wound allocation shenanigans are going away in 6th ed.
The claw is cheap if you have something to fix.
The crystal is also inexpensive, but it's range is short.

Chaos isn’t a pit. Chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail, and never get to try again. The fall breaks them. And some are given a chance to climb, but refuse. They cling to the realm, or love, or the gods…illusions. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is, but they’ll never know this. Not until it’s too late.

The gloom prism acts like a Hood against offensive psykers, especially against Jaws, so investing in one can save you some psyker annoyances...

So if I want to use a Gloom Prism with these old metal guys, I am gonna have to convert some, hmm.
What does it look like on the new model? Does it take up an arm slot, or is it something sitting on the back?

i think on the new models it is a crystal looking thing. I think it attaches underneath now rather than on top.
the gun is now mounted on the back so using the gun no longer takes away any cc attacks.

Don't have a pic, but the new Spyders have 6 tool mounts on their under bellies,s under their arms.
The gloom prism is mounted between the two middle mounts. Two arms come out and hold an octagonal gem between them.

For two more months though, you don't want to run spyders in uniform units. I, too, shall be happy when wound allocation shenanigans are gone, but until then you benefit from mixing equipment.
And frankly the only equipment worth getting is the gloom prism. But that's just me.

I don't know, three TL small blasts are pretty nice. It's always good having more firepower in the army. But ya, they're kinda pricey for what they are.

If the fabricator could return quantum shielding it would be most awesome but as it stands it is a tough call. Now Gloom is worth it just for all that psychic defense. Get two of them and you have a bubble of 3 inches from each, threeish inch base, and two inch coherency. So about a 14 inch line of psychic defense. Pretty useful if you ask me.

I think the fabrication claw works in the right army, and I find the gun rather pricey for what you get as most of the time I find my spyders running to keep up with the scarabs so they wouldn't get very many chances to shoot.
But I think the gloom prism is the 3rd best war gear option in the codex (well maybe 4th with whip coils being third) Right behind war scythe and MSS. It's my go to point filler when I have a handful left after making any list.

Yeah, that's how I feel about it as well. I am not sure what Matt Ward was thinking when leaving soulless robots with no other psychic defense of any kind. If anything, necrons should be naturally immune to psychics.
Can anyone explain to me how the lash of submission can work on a soulless robot? What has Slaanesh to offer one such as he/she/it?
Regarding loadout, the prism is a must take for the wound shenanigans. Fab claws would be useful if they grant an extra CC attack, but this is not clear to me. The claw is a close combat weapon stated explicitly, but the rules also say that models that already have two CC weapons do not get additional attack for an extra one, just the choice which to use. So, are the spyder's appendages CC weapons?

yep, but it doesn't matter, 'cause they don't have x2 - either none or x1. (Particle beamer != usable in CC) So they don't get an extra attack. (That would be nice.) Same deal with the Wraiths - they can take a pistol type weapon, but still end up with 0 or 1 CC weapon, can't get to that extra attack.

Remember though, it may seem pointless to us right now but it will probably make a world of difference in the next edition.
