I've always loved Napoleonic's, It was always my favourite game and I remember with great fondness the regular games of Napoleons Battles when I first started wargaming all those years ago.

Despite this I have never owned a Napoleonic army, When I first started everyone already had it all covered at that club in 15mm and buying 28mm was for very rich people. It was an impossible dream to think of having a 28mm Napoleonic army.

How times have changed! Not only can I now afford such things but the introduction of all the wonderful plastic sets out there have even made it quite cheap.

So I have decided to embark on a large, long term project. Not just one army, but two, British and French for the Peninsular.

Just finished my first Battalion of Brits, these are from Perry's:

Although I knew this would be a long term undertaking I don't think I realised what I've gotten into, these guys are very hard to paint, this lot took a month. They are very "fussy" figures, if anything they have too much detail. I'l also be using sets from Victrix as well.

Lots to do

Very nice, very nice indeed. I have wanted to do this era myself for a long time. I was put off in the beginning, being told you dont want to do Nappy because getting and painting the models never ends. Like the other games end, I found a skirmish game based on "The Song of Blades and Heros" that I am going to work on. NOt a lot of models and I can spend the time these on painting them. What system are you using to play with. Looks a bit like Lasalle basing?

Thanks mate. Not 100% sure on rules atm, I was considering Black Powder but I might even write my own.

Nice infantry! Napoleonics is definitely the black hole of wargaming. I've got a project brewing back home that I'm hoping to get back to in a few months (1809 Austrians and French at Aspern-Essling), but it definitely seems like it's going to be a long-term endeavor!

What level are you wanting to play at? Brigade, Division, Corps, etc.?

Black Powder is a good choice, and obviously there are tons of options, but if you're looking at playing at a tactical level, Lasalle might also be worth a try. It's a solid, not overly complicated ruleset, and it's also somewhat flexible as far as units go. For example, infantry units are either 4 or 6 bases, and they usually represent a battalion, or a bit more or less depending on the unit strengths of the regiments you're trying to represent.

Looking at Divisional level. The plan for the Brits is three brigades of infantry each with 3 battalions and 1 Arty, same for the French, possibly 1 or two cavarly brigades a side too.

The Brits will also have the 60th in there somewhere but I haven't decided how to represent them on the table yet, either a couple of stands per brigade (which would be correct from an historical point of view, each brigade having one company of the 60th) or fielding them all together.

I always liked shacko rules, a good fast ruileset for brigade-corps sized games. We played 15mm, but im sure can be played with larger scales.

Yeah, Lasalle would work for that size of game (there are rules for rifle-armed units as well). To echo Lampy, I've heard good things about Shako (and I thought about trying it for War of 1812). General de Brigade would probably also work, and of course Black Powder, as you said. You're definitely not starved for options!

Somewhere in south-central England.

How big are your armies going to be?

I have a 6mm Napoleonic Russian army, pretty much the other end of the scale but it does contain enough units to field eight corps.

The detail of painting is a lot less, of course.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

About 15 units a side including Cavalry and Artillery. Having said that I am still not fixed on a rule set as yet and it could be more.
