Hey,
This is a simple post for everyone.
When you have money to spend on 40k/fantasy or w/e but you only have enough for 1 box/model but you want something the equal amount.
What do you do?

I personally set them a number from 1-6 (if there is less than 6 things I want I will assign them to d3 or evens and odds or 1+2 etc. Then roll my decider dice ( Big play area dice made out of foam which my cousin has in her play house ) and then pick the model which corresponds too.

But how do You (The people of Dakka) go about choosing what you want for your army?
I am curious that is all. xD

Nothing to do with how the army will play or whatever. I set a resolution this year, simply to buy and build what I haven't before. So I got the Dreadknight,Grey nights and grey knights terminators. Also got an Ork Dreadnought. No plans to use the GKs, just wanted to build and paint something Ive not tried before. So go with the new I say! So there.

I would probably just get the unit that would be most beneficial to my army, but that is only if I honestly couldn't decide on a box that I like best aesthetically/fluffwise.

I originally set out with a list of kits I wanted to start my Traitor Guard and a time limit in which to do it. So whenever I had the money for 40K bits I picked up another kit off of my list until I had the parts required to keep me happy. I had also intended to paint before buying more but find my attention span shorter than I had hoped, and since building the models is a large part of the fun for me I start side projects.

So to summarise, I usually have a plan and stick somewhat closely to it with a few impulse buys for side projects.

Right now Ima try and not buy anything till I paint what I have (or at least paint a lot of it). Of course Ill probably make exceptions if I need a specific unit or find a really good deal.

Whichever one I wanted to paint more, or I needed more for a certain build. If I was building a mech-heavy IG army and it was down to me buying a Chimera or a Heavy Weapon Squad, I'd get the Chimera because I need it more for my list.

Part of my decision is influenced by whether or not one of the items is easily proxies with something else. I play with a pretty lax group, so generally we let people proxy things for their lists, so long as they're about the same size and shape.

40k Armies:
Alaitoc 9300 points
Chaos 15000 points
Speed Freeks 3850 points

WHFB Armies:
Lizardmen 1000 points
