Can't believe that there doesn't appear to be a thread on this... (EDIT: There is... I just hope that my little review might stand on its own merits)
At any rate, there's a reason why ArmA 2: Combined Operations is the second top seller on Steam... Don't get me wrong, ArmA is a fine game, but it doesn't exactly appeal to the majority of gamers and has been out a looong time.
Ever wanted a *real* zombie game? One that harnesses the actual experience of survival in such a hostile environment?
Well, Day Z pops you in the middle of a 200km2 world with 49 other players. Your most basic aims are to fulfill your hunger and drinking needs. Beyond that you need other necessities; if you're hurt, you'll need bandages and painkillers (the latter to stop you shaking afterward). If you get more seriously injured, you'll need morphine... Blood packs for transfusions too. And of course, to merely survive you're going to need firearms and their requisite ammunition. To navigate? A compass, a map, binoculars, night-vision goggles... To hunt? A knife for cutting up the animal.
Add to this the fact that the game can spawn literally hundreds of zombies and you need to work together to achieve these aims.
The problem? Totally free morality. Zombies aren't what kill players; players kill players.
This leads to the most tense gaming experience I've ever had. When you come upon another player, you might simply drop him... it's more to your benefit to work together, but can you trust him? He might simply drop you.... This makes the game very interesting from a moral perspective and first-contact is a genuinely frightening experience. Your character is persistent; you can server hop and your gear will come with you; but one bullet, just ONE bullet can end hours of work. There's a reason why the average life expectancy is four hours.
Perhaps videos will speak better than I can:

I have been fighting the urge to get this since I'm on a time crunch project. I don't think my willpower will last past my deadline though.
