Hi there!
I have been playing with my humble Tau for a while now, but lately I grew a bit tired of them (and of waiting for a shiny new, and a bit more competitive codex) so I've decided to try something new (concerning 40k. I mean)
I've always have had a rather unnerving affection toward Nurgle themed models, especially Typhus and his death guard, so it was not a hard choice to make.
Alas, I do not have any idea however where to begin building a list that is not for the Greater Good, for I'm no real tournie player, but sometimes I'd like to let them prove themselves, but the main idea is to remain as nurgly as possible... meaning i have nothing against a few Oblies, as even a blind and deaf tau knows they are THE guys of CSM, but I wont field any lashprinces, berserkers or other non shitgreen units.
So, where should I begin with a death guard army, composing of Typhus, plague marines & friends?
Any plausible advice much appreciated!
Thanks!

Well just a thought, Nurgle bikers have toughness 6! Oblits are awesome. And dont forget about Nurgle marked CSM squads.
Oh and Defilers are great distraction. I very rarely have mine destroyed... most of the time they just take out the battlecannon then its good ole close combat time.

Hey Muz,
I would start with two squads of 7 or 10 Plaguemarines (7 being the lore/fluff driven number, 10 being the standard most people take them in).
For now though, I would focus less on a list and to just start collecting models, for if the rumors are correct we'll be seeing an entirely new list for CSM - who knows what will really be added, altered, or shifted (more marks for vehicles/dreads?).

This is good advice; if you believe the rumors surrounding the 6th ed Chaos codex, cultist squads will no longer be troops unless led by the cult-specific special character (most likely Typhus).

For the time being, keep in mind that while squad sizes of 7 or 10 are fairly dangerous, you only need to take the minimum squad size of 5 to take 2 special weapons (MG/PG/Flamer). 5 Plague marines in a Rhino with 2 Meltaguns is a very economical 170 points.

Up until the most recent FAQ release, the Nurgle Warptime Prince was a very popular HQ choice; however, Warptime took a hit in effectiveness and it seems like now people are favoring Lash Princes (or sorcerers) instead. Still, for a Nurgle-themed army, a Prince with Nurgle's Rot or Wind of Chaos would still be fairly effective.

Summoned Lesser Daemons, Greater Daemons, and Vindicators have a bit of a DG feel as well

On a side note, my first 40k army was 2000 points of Death Guard, and while I found it wonderfully fluffy and good-looking, I found that it was woefully lacking in killing power. Get some PM/CSM/Oblits and make a starting army, but don't completely write off the other gods. The manipulation ability of Lash of Submission, the resilience of units with the Mark of Tzeentch, and the undeniable assault superiority of Khorne Berzerkers still makes CSM a competitive codex; that competitive edge comes from the diversity of different units and using the Marks/Icons of the different gods.

Side effects of worshiping Papa Nurgle include (and are not limited to): Boils, scabs, internal bleeding, external bleeding, bleeding from the gums, eyes and ears, sweating, dehydration, furuncles, rash, pus-filled sores, nausea, vomiting, bloody vomit, black vomit, black & bloody vomit, sneezing, runny nose, dry nose, coughing, dry cough, wet cough, not-so-dry-but-still-raspy coughing, fever, hay fever, athlete's foot, athlete's arm, swimmer's ear, farmer's tongue, drowsiness, sleepiness, insomnia, mad cow disease, mad postal worker disease, loose bowels, constipation, anal leakage, and blood clotting. In most cases side effects were generally in the extreme and permanent. Consult your local cultist before worshiping Nurgle.

You should just wait until the next Codex. In all reality playing the CSM codex as is (without limiting yourself to the Nurgle units) is as hard if not harder than playing Tau sometimes. Granted, if you really really don't care than get what you want...but it may be better to just go ahead and wait.

That doesn't mean don't start getting things that you will definately be fielding, like Plague Marines.

It may also be worth your while having a look on Ebay, I got 40 Forgeworld Death guard upgrade sets for £25 and my entire 1750 army cost me about £100 including 5 vehicles, all from Ebay.

The prefect example of someone missing the point.
Do not underestimate the Squats. They survived for millenia cut off from the Imperium and assailed on all sides. Their determination and resilience is an example to us all.

Its just a shame that they couldn't fight off Andy Chambers.
