Hey I've been playing No Limits: http://www.wargamesunlimited.net/nolimits/index.html It is a free sci-fi wargame I use for my own home brew sci-fi setting. It has a force creation section that allows you to make an army using any miniatures you own. There are also several army list made up.

Anyone else playing it? They also have fantasy rules and a space ship battle game.

I saw this ruleset a while back. I tried getting into it, but it was a bit too much for me. Complicated, I mean. I get easily confused.

That said, it did look really cool, and I definitely want some Spriggan miniatures spugs!

Many and varied forces in progress according to waxing & waning whims.

I may never finish an army in my life.

Ironworker,
I've wondered if anyone plays No Limits. Can you tell us more about how it works and how it compares to 40k?

I looked into it when I was looking for an open, generic sci-fi system that was more streamlined than 40k. No Limits has alot of features that appeal to me more than 40k, but as it's no less complicated, I didn't end up playing it.

Still, it's reportedly a good system. For anyone who is interested in it, it's worthwhile to check out the game VOR. It's the game that No-Limits is based on, and though oop, it's very well produced and often avaiable for very low cost. It also has a unit creation mechanic like No Limits. I have a copy that I keep telling my self I'll get around to playing some day.

For those looking for a simpler system, I'd recommend looking at WarEngine. It's also free and adaptable, but it is far more streamlined. It's the system that I settled on for platoon level sci-fantasy gaming.

It's only main drawback is that it's not well suited for games with alot of vehicles.

Eilif I haven't played much 40k since 2nd edition. That said I think that No Limits is on about the same level as 2nd edition 40k was. The biggest difference is in the Action Point concept. Everything has a number of Action points. 8 is the base number of points. Everything cost action points. Movement, firing weapons ect. If you have a gun that uses 4 Action Points and you have 8 action points then you can only use 4 actions points to move or do anything else if you want to fire the gun. Also it's not an I go U go system. Players take turns activating their units until every unit has activated. Other than that it's pretty much the same kind of game as far as complexity.

The big advantage it has is it's very robust force creation system. Want to field a "Space Marine" army because you own one. No problem. Want to go out and buy a bunch of plastic bugs to use as your army that's just as easy. It does take some time to work out your army because there is not "Codex" to go by but you can field anything. In our current home campaign My army is made of mostly Imperial Guard and scratch built vehicles. The opposing "Militia" force is made from all kinds of human figures from several different companies and it all works together just fine. There are a few army list available for download as well.

I wouldn't use this system for tournament style play. It's too easy to abuse the rules. You have to regulate yourself on force creation although it does balance fairly well no matter what you build there are no rules about how many super killer fifty foot tall robots or whatever you decide to build. It's a great system for friendly play but if your group has a tournament mindset then it's not for you.

It takes more paperwork to get the game going but you can use absolutely anything you want to use. It's a great system for a narrative campaign but it's not as well suited for highly competitive play.

Thanks for that! I've read the rules, but hearing it from someone whose experienced them gives far more clarity.

It does seem like a good system. I find that action-point and alternating activation based systems can give alot more flexibility than a strict order-of-play and IGOUGO. Also, I almost exclusively now play games with unit-creation mechanics.

However having recently replayed 2nd edition on a nostalgic whim, being on the same level of complexity as 2nd Ed 40k only confirms why I never played No Limits to begin with. I've just got no patience anymore.

I'm more a WarEngine, Song of Blades and Heroes level-of-complexity sort of gamer now.
