Colby Dauch joins Craig and Russ in the third chair. Colby is the man under the hat at Plaid Hat Games, bringing out hit titles like Summoner Wars and Dungeon Run.
In this episode the group discuss the recent "Board Game Breakout." Board games seem to be appearing in more and more places. Are they going main stream? Why now?
But first, since we've got Colby on the show we thougt it would be great to get the "Plaid Hat Games Origin Story." How did Colby get is start in game design and where did Summoner Wars come from?
All that and our other not-too-horrible segments including:
- Total Fan Girl
- Do You Ever Notice
- When you wish upon a game
- & More

Another top show guys. I also learnt how to pronounce Dauch, which I am relieved to hear is neither "Dork" or "Douche". Colby's origin story was a good listen and it occurs to me (after hearing Cody and Jon's show) that there might be some mileage in looking at religion's relationship with gaming, which seems to be pretty positive nowadays.
Craig: this may be of some interest to you http://www.bbc.co.uk/5live/films/code_of_conduct.pdf. It's from the UK's most popular radio film show, and came about after quite a lot of audience participation.

Great episode as usual.
Craig, from my understanding, The Tyranny of Cliches is about how cliches are used as arguments and evidence for believes, but they don't actually relate to reality and we only think they do because they've been drilled into us for years.
I heard a few radio interviews about the book and it sounded interesting.
It was great listening to Colby's story about Plaid Hat and getting started. Very encouraging and informative.

About the whole movie theater experience thing... I totally agree, but my advice is just don't go. Instead of going out to the movies, the GF and I just watch stuff at home. I put together a nice home theater setup with a ginormous plasma tv, you get to kick back on a comfy sofa and actually pause the movie when you gotta pee
It's just so much more fun not to have to deal with stupid people. The 1 or 2 times a year we do go, we both take a day off from work and see a matinee in a mostly empty theater. And, we avoid any "blockbuster" movie for a good week or 2.

Loved it, Holdenstein, thanks for the link! I also like this commercial from Texas (careful, not safe for little ones or at work): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1L3eeC2lJZs
And bbb . . . Tyranny of Cliches was . . . ok. It got a little too full of itself in some points, and got mostly dry and boring in the middle . . . but it was ok. Some good stuff in there, but I'm gladd I'm done.
Now back to some mindless urban fantasy!

Far-stretching, endless Time
Brings forth all hidden things,
And buries that which once did shine.
The firm resolve falters, the sacred oath is shattered;
And let none say, "It cannot happen here".

Another fine addition to the ever growing D6G Archive.
Colby was great in the third chair. Now, out of guilt (and enjoyment of the game), I will have to get more Summoner Wars stuff due to the incredible deal I got on the already awesomely priced master set.
TFG drives a charger. Wow! I wouldn't have thought. I imagined her love of cars to be akin to my wife's love of Ducati's. If I had one in the garage, then she would moon over it. However, it would be after Craig's Agricola tournament win before she would ever ride it. Hopefully, Nicole will get to try her driving prowess next to Stig.
So, I apologize for talking during Avengers. I did not talk all the way through. Every now and then, something would happen on screen that my little fan-boy self never thought would happen. "Holy cow! It's a heli-carrier!" Whispered, but emitted out loud.
Allow me to bring another side to the theater etiquette discussion. An exception to the two types of audience response would be the melodrama. Booing and cheering are acceptable responses.
In that line, there are also certain horror movies. A horror suspense is not what I'm thinking of, but something more along the line of the 'Nightmare on Elm Street' movies. They tend to fit into the melodrama model, eliciting responses poor decisions made by victims and 'cheers' for extravagant deaths. I have had a number of movies made more entertaining for me by appropriate call outs in these movies.
Finally, an anecdote. I went to an anime film by a studio that I liked the artwork of. In the course of the movie, the main character's friends are killed in very lingering slow shots. Cherry blossoms fall slowly to the ground. Magical, sparkling tears fall from the eyes of the hero. So often this happened that when the final confrontation ended with the hero's frenemy's head falling into the hero's lap. At this point, the theater erupts in laughter. One lone fan gets up in the front, turns to face the crowd, and yell, "What's wrong with you, f@(#&s!" A mediocre film became an excellent memory that still makes me chuckle.
