So, I have about $150 worth of Infinity minis (Aleph) coming in the mail from a trade, because the setting and minis look pretty awesome, and I haven't played true sci-fi in a long time.

However, I'm at a loss, regarding where to get started.

My first question is, how different is the new edition? The rules have a hefty price tag with them, but I'm the sort of person that enjoys learning all factions' pieces/story, so just the online PDF isn't going to work (also, I hate trying to find a page in any of those readers). Would the 1st edition book, with the PDF for updates be plenty?

Also, I like having 2 forces, what would be good (different playstyle and not mismatched) to compliment Aleph? I like the look of Nomads....

Thanks in advance.

The fluff wouldn't be too different, I suppose, but I know quite a few of the rules got tweaked and altered.
So if you can find a 1st ed rulebook in English and use the pdf for the rules, you'd be pretty set to go.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

That is not dead which can eternal lie ...

... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.

I recommend downloading the rules. Sure, you want to buy the actual rulebooks some day - so do I - but why not just begin your Infinity journey already? What have you got to lose? I can also recommend downloading the DevilTeam app and/or playing around with the Devilteam army builder on the Corvus Belli website. Both of them are fun ways to explore building lists. You can gradually develop a good intuitive sense of what you're doing with those tools.

I only just started playing the game, so I can't speak to the similarities between the old and new editions.

Finally, the best place to start is to go to your FLGS. Most Infinity communities I've met are full of people eager to help you build lists, run you demo games, and generally bring you into the game.

And I know this is DakkaDakka, but it must be said: the Corvus Belli forums really are an excellent place to post lists, get tactical advice, and generally chat about the game. This forum is healthy enough, but I've learned a lot about Infinity by reading and posting on the Corvus Belli forums.

My P&M blog - in which I chronicle the transformation of a battered windfall of models into an awesome addition to my Blood Angels force (hopefully) - can be found here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/431820.page.

Also, I think any force is good to compliment. If you like Nomads, then go Nomads!
Fittingly, they're kind of the nemesis of Aleph within Humanity.

As far as the background and general layout are concerned, the 1st and 2nd edition rulebooks are near-identical.

Thanks for the tips, getting the first book and looking online for the PDFs for updates.

So, I just got my aleph minis, a few came with cards (pics, logos, names, no stats) though not all did. Are all of the Aleph rules in the Human Sphere book? (I heard they were a later addition to the game...)

Yes, up until the Human Sphere expansion book, Aleph was only in the fluff.
You can still find these on the website =)
