Do you think its more of a subtle gradual thing? Like being slowly coaxed into a falsehood. Like chaos tells you everything will be okay and rubs your back to soothe you. And then once you turn it curses you and bites?

Varies.

Sometimes it's stupid fast, sometimes it's slow.

Regular cultists will probably be converted in hours, likely out of fear.

More important agents are taken their time with. They're slowly corrupted, keeping their sanity and often their purpose. These are the more dangerous ones.

At least a chaos corrupted cultist is obvious, what with likely having a massive eight-pointed star painted on his forehead with the blood of his family as he charges at you brandishing a primitive club, but the Inquisitor who stays in his right mind, keep his allegiance secret, is far more dangerous.

Some people don't even realise they've fallen. Just slowly, slowly their perspectives change, but they don't realise anything. In the end they end up fighting for chaos, without even seeing how they've ended up there.

For instance a company of marines are trapped on a death world. They are picked off one by one until only 40 or so remain. These battle-hardened few are starving and wounded but cling so desperately to life that when they come across a colony, they empty it's stores and raid it for repair parts without even realising the toll they're inflicting on the civilians.

I always wondered on this when thinking about the Heresy, did the traitors realise that something wasn't quite right when their allies started wearing flesh cloaks and growing spikes in odd places.

Like the Word Bearers, fair do's, they went in whole hog and were well aware of what was happening but like some of the others must have be like WTF, he's wearing the face of my old mate from the Raven Guard, shenanigan's are a foot!

Not all of the dudes are Chaos worshiping nut jobs. This sentiment does exclude the Night Lords though, they were skully and emo from the beginning.

No pity, no remorse, no shoes
