On the one hand I can see it being useful because if you have a spore throwing out pie plates left and right it forces your opponent to waste fire on a unit that more or less already fulfilled its purpose and it would be great of area denial. But i can also see it being a point sink. What do you think?

A cheapish weapon does seem useful - as you say, this stops your opponent ignoring the pod, and it will occasionally get a lucky shot for maximum amusement value (for you).
But if points are tight, 'naked' pods are possibly a better idea.

I only do it if I have points left over. I'm just not a fan of guns on the pod aside from what it already has.

It's armaments are already good considering it's points, but cluster spines are a lot of fun against hordes.

Well it already has ripper tentacles, which is useful if it lands next to a light vehicle.
Since it's a monstrous creature, it can fire another gun.
I tend to use cluster spines for it's Strength 5 large blast.

Or you can take the barbed strangler for a nice pinning attack.

Agreed, If you manage to pin the closest unit the turn you drop down, the enemy will not be able to do anything their turn other than watch whatever was inside of that pod get out and commense eating everything alive, including themselves! HAHAHAHA So you don't get shot at and you get to charge = win.

The only problem with Large Blast is that the Spore must target the closet unit, which could lead to back-scatter problems for tw unit that just disembarked.
