I like the dirty look of the olive (camo). Does anyone prefer the more traditional look? Please help me out.
This is a test model
Done with cheap walmart paint and citadel washes.
Also any tips on the decals would be nice. The damn thing was a pain to get on right and then it was all shiny.

I like the colour, but you have gone a bit far with your wash's in my opinion, try watering them down?
getting the decals on can be a bother and I haven't checked on whether it works or not, btu GW says their new medium helps the transfer's to stick down with a matte finish, you should give it a go
Otherwise it looks okay, ignore traditional, it's your army and you have to be happy with it
There's a traditional Salamanders army in LHS and other than the fact the player is a great painter, the army itself isn't impressive looking because of the childish green colour (:

I too think it looks really nice to be honest, and don't worry about it being bright green, originally the salamanders were a lot darker colour in their artwork, almost like you have there. =] I agree with davy though, maybe try thinning the washes ever so slightly, will make a world of difference =]
Good luck!

I'm actually fine with that gritty look given by the thicker wash. It makes them look soot-stained. The only thing I should suggest adding are some flamey-bits on the shoulders. Remember, a fire is yellower to where its hotter and redder towards its tips.

It doesn't matter how bloody far the apple falls from the tree. If the apple fell off of a Granny Smith, that apple is going to grow into a Granny bloody Smith. The only difference is whether that apple grows in the shade of the tree it fell from. |

I think you did a great job even though I feel the color choice is a little to close the the Raptors chapter. Salamanders are cool, but if you wanted a more "realistic" chapter without the bright colors, you should go with the Raptors!
As far as decals go, invest in MicroSol and MicroSet. Most hobby shops should carry them (I got mine from a local model train store in my town that deals in miniature wargamming a little bit) or order them off the Internet. They go about $3 a piece (it will last you forever, too) and make sure you get both!

Good idea, but as mentioned previously it's over-washed which is leading to a blotchy look which is among the only thing drawing away from the mini, also there is a pretty noticeable mold line on the side of its helmet.

@Scooty The Raptors are awesome indeed. However, being a family man myself, I love the Salamanders way of valuing life and family.
@Squidman those damn mold lines will be the death of me

i personally like the original color better. or just a bit more green pigment...
washing a model is good, but dont forget to paint your color back and maybe even a tint lighter to hightlight it
