Putting this out there for all interested parties, we'll be holding the second annual Grim Open on June 9th and 10th. This will be a NOVA style event, 2000 points, with six games, four on Saturday and two on Sunday. There is a fifty dollar entry fee. Further information can be found on our website, specifically at http://www.brgrim.com/?page_id=1421, and if anyone has any questions I'll be happy to answer them here.

Any word on how many people are signed up? I bought my ticket a few weeks ago so I'm just curious.

I know some people who have signed up and who aren't on that list, so I don't think it's up to date.

Likewise.

Your scarabs are the tasty appetizer I plan to eat before your guns mow me down with reckless abandon. Too bad I dont have any drop pods to surround Storm ravens with this time.

Apologies guys, I've had some internet problems and, in the midst of thesis writing, that sort of takes cake on what little reliable internets time I had.
We're figuring on somewhere on the order of 25ish. There's a signup list in the shop with about 20 names on it, and I know there are non-locals who've made arrangements via PayPal. Bob is hoping to have everyone going by 9am on Saturday. I think that's a bit optimistic, but I understand the motivation-with four games on Saturday, we want everyone to have ample time to enjoy themselves on Saturday evening, get food, all that good stuff. Paint judging will be on Saturday evening, just like last year. We have a panel of four or five guys who're all going to go with the same checklist we ran last year and average out the scores, so that way one guy who says hates your color scheme doesn't kill your appearance score or anything like that.

Is the checklist publicly available? I'm adding some finishing touches to my list and display board and knowing what I should pay particular attention to would help me to prioritize.

It's available on our website, but, give me about fifteen minutes to type up a copy and I'll post it here. Automatically Appended Next Post: Initial Impressions:
0- Unfinished Models in the army
2- Absolute Minimums (3 Colors and some sort of base; Army is tournament legal)
4- Well displayed, apparent highlights or washes, good basing
6- Excellent Display! Well thought out color scheme, vivid details.
These points are the "The judge walks up to your army and scores you on the first fifteen or thirty seconds of impressions."
Display Board:
0-Cookie Tray, Tupperware Lid, Lunch Tray. You fail. Unless you have some sort of Pillsbury Dough Boy theme going, in which case the cookie tray may work.
1-Textured board with some kind of flock and/or static grass, or painted in theme with your army.
2-Simple board with terrain features, flocking, static grass, etc.
3-Very good overall diorama with terrain features that coincide with and enhance army theme.
Basing:
0-Not that you have no bases, it's that you just have plain, unpainted black ones, unless it's somehow theme-appropriate
1-Basic flocking/painted bases or unaltered resin/cast bases
2-Complex use of static grass, flock, cork, or modeled bases. Modified resin basis (Can be simple as adding debris, source lighting, or static grass in the right places)
3-Above and beyond bases. Well modeled bases throughout the army. IE, Raveners bursting through the ground, disturbed earth behind running feet/wheels/treads, bases that interlock to really enhance the display.
Conversions:
0-None. Stock models assembled straight out of the box.
1-Simple head and weapons swaps, or one moderately sized conversion. (IE, Forgeworld bits, two kits combined into one model, using Scibor bits to make a command figure)
2-Many minor conversions throughout the army or a few complex ones (IE Scratch built bionics on sergeants, sculpted shoulder pads, vehicle mods)
3-Above and beyond conversions: Heavy sculpting; every model in the army has some sort of conversion work, repose, or something like that; scratch built models feature in the army
Additional Techniques:
0-No additional detailing whatsoever
1-Painted squad markings, army symbols, or signs of weathering or battle damage (IE, soot stained barrels, chipped painted, rust in tracks, mud, etc)
2-Freehand on a few small models or many small ones OR a moderate amount of weathering and battle damage.
3-Major freehand work, murals, symbols, other intricate designs plus other previous stuff)
In general, the difference between one and two points in this is matter of degree and execution; properly executed decals count for this too. The three point thing is where you take it to another level.
Highlighting Techniques:
0-No highlighting apparent; models appear flat with no depth
1-Simple line highlights, dipped in wash, light drybrush
2-Clean and prominent highlights, washes blended into paint, drybrushing combined with other techniques
3-Super line highlights, washes blended into shading, combination of all techniques throughout the entire army; Wet blending/Layering/Natural look to blending/NMM
Obviously there are multiple techniques here and we're looking at the complexity and execution rather than any single particular style. Properly NMM does get props, because, well, NMM.
Army Cohesion:
0-The circus comes to town. Unless it's Harlequins, in which case, well played.
1-Three colors shared, but not consistently
2-The army is exceptionally uniform, sharing their colors consistently throughout the army.
3-Above and beyond: The army is exceptionally uniform, with color scheme variations that mark individual units. The quality of the work is consistent through all of the pieces of the army.
Background/Theme/Fluff/Things that Amuse Us.
0-No effort is provided in this category
1-Provide a short written background, a cohesive theme, army assembled according to canon, having some sort of humor factor (IE, Gorka Morka Race Day!, a one paragraph blurb in your army list describing the reason for the assembly of the army)
2-Cohesive theme incorporated into the display board and a short written background.
3-Above and beyond theme and fluff: (IE, long written background, display board depicting the theme, additional items like objective markers that aid in showing off the theme, etc)
This used to be a big thing in the old days of GTs, and we liked it. Plus we want to reward players who do things like incorporate store campaigns into the theme of their army, that sort of thing.
Cool Factor:
0-3: These points are completely arbitrary. The Cool Factor is reserved for armies the judges feel have exemplary elements that are not covered within the confines of the rubric.
IE: One of our Grey Knights players has a display board that's a Strike Cruiser. A four foot long, fully painted Strike Cruiser. He got his three points. Another player brought Skaven Imperial Guard. Cool Points.
Questions?

We may well creep up over 30, in case anyone's keeping count and is on the fence about attending. There seems to be a lot of 'I don't want to play in a GT if 6th edition is coming out so soon' going on, but as we get down to it more and more people seem to be manning up and throwing in.
