The dakka user profile has an option that allows you to state when you started wargaming (mainly so people will know what references you are familiar with and what might need explaining in more detail).

I've attached a graph of the counts of all users who have used that drop down. There will be loads of bad data in there, but the general trend should be accurate.

The graph does not correlate with dakka's 'new user' traffic very closely. Our traffic started shooting up in spring 2009, and has not stopped growing since then, and it covers many gamers of different ages and experience so should not influence this data too much.

Begin conjecture about what happened in 2008!

2011 has seen a return to more historical levels of wargamer growth. Please note that this is all wargaming, not just 40k as well.

You havent labelled your axis. Naughty!

Interesting dip around 2001 after a relatively steady upward thrend. Wonder what that was?

The old meta is dead and the new meta struggles to be born. Now is the time of munchkins.

3rd ed trial add-ons (close combat and vehicles) perhaps?
There's always a change in player numbers around 12 months either side of an edition change.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

That is not dead which can eternal lie ...

One thing that just came to mind regarding the spike in 2008 is that dakka started to appear on the front page of search results for many wargaming terms at that time. New gamers would probably search for stuff, find dakka and sign up in greater frequency from that point than they did in the past. It would not explain the size of the spike, but it could explain part of it.
