In light of a waltz through OT, I've come to find the word to be abused to the point of ridiculousness. As something frowned upon in these forums (I would think), I find it odd that people call others trolls, and announce themselves as trolls as if it were a good thing that should be praised.
I know there's a filter set to where swearing is replaced with other words like gak, why don't we replace the word troll with something more appropriate?
TFG perhaps? Or obnoxious even, something to expand peoples vocabulary and get them to use more than one word to describe all sorts of problematic people.

Well, let's be realistic. OT is pretty much under-the-bridge for Dakka.
By which I mean it's where the Trolls live.

Would create an issue elsewhere I think, with games that have actual trolls in them.

Very true. I'd like to think of it as a black hole where only bitterness and ignorance survive. STILL! We mustn't give in to despair. The world troll is a real problem, and I'm pretty quick to cut into my friends irl when they use it. If that's the only word they can think of to use when calling someone out, they're best off just shutting their mouths until they can think of something better. Ah, didn't think about that.
...
Well damns, shut down.

Ogre? We could do Ogre. But that might offend some people.

Well, as n0t_u pointed out, there's more than a couple game systems that use the word troll. Replacing it with obnoxious, or undistinguished charlatan, would only bring about confusion.

To what end?
'Troll' is an established term on internet forums. While it gets bandied about more than it should. that's more a side-effect of the attitiude that a lot of people take into discussions than any failing of the word itself. People are far too quick to label someone who disagrees with them as a troll, presumably on the basis that 'My point of view is clearly the correct one, so if you disagree you must be just trying to get a rise out of me... and hence a troll.'
So what we need isn't to change the word. It's for posters to just be a little more accepting of the idea that other people may have opinions that differ from their own.
