Are the Vallego Game and Model colors the same, for example is VGC Gold Yellow (007) and VMC Golden Yellow (948) the same?

I checked the Dakka color chart and are listed as similar.

If not, what is the difference between VGC and VMC paints?

Not the same. Major differences are that MC has higher pigmentation but are not as durable to wear and tear.

The VMC are a bit thicker then the VGC, as they contain more pigment and need to be thinned a bit. They also dry matte, instead of the VGC satin finish and generally are more muted in their tone.

The VGC is similar to the old GW range, as in that the palette is best suited for fantasy models. The VMC has a much greater color spectrum and is a bit less vibrant.

Hope this helps :-)

Different people have listed different differences in behavior, so it can be a bit hard to judge. At it's core, similarities in colors and names are incidental, as they're two separate paint ranges. VGC is aimed at the fantasy/sci-fi wargames crowd, with lots of parallels in colors and names to the now defunct Citadel line. I'm not sure about pigment density, but I know the medium is a bit more robust, so as to better withstand the rigors of unvarnished gaming. VMC is aimed more at historical modelers, with a much broader line containing many more muted and natural tones, as well as historical uniform/camo/marking colors.

There's no problem with picking and choosing what you like between the two ranges, of course. They'll likely behave a bit differently, but even colors within a single range tend to do that. If you varnish after painting, any discrepancies in the sheen of the finish will be normalized, as well.

I use VGC as my primary paint line, with select VMC, VMA, P3 and Reaper Masters paints for specific needs(I have 9 different shades of gold for example and about 25 browns).

I don't recommend buying based on the brand or line. Buy a paint that you find useful for the task you have. Also, if you have some extra money when buying a mandatory few colors(like when you run out of black or such) try out a new color from a different line, even if you already have that color in one line. VGC Blood Red and VMC Flat Red are quite different, and I found that the Flat Red covers better, although it is less orange than Blood Red. I bought it not because I needed a new red, but to see if I liked it better. As such, I've found uses for both in my current armies and projects.

IMO you can never have too many metallics and browns. Metal comes in a good number of colors, especially when it ages and sees use as armor or weapons. Browns are everywhere. Leather, dirt, uniforms are all places where brown is seen, and it occurs in virtually every shade possible. So for me, I like having variation in the leather straps on armor across an entire unit for example. Or it makes shading and highlighting brown cloth easier as I don't have to mix up colors.

General difference:
1.) Game colours are meant to copy GW's old Citadel paint range (from the time Game Colours were released) up to copying the name as closely as possible. They usually have more pigments than their Citadel counterpart and their match can be better or worse. Being made for gaming pieces, they are more resistant to rub off during play.
2.) Model Colours are a huge range made for display models, a.o. military modelling. Therefore the number of different greens and browns copying historical camo colours. Being for display only models mainly, they are less resistant to rub off.

I have paints from both paint lines. I have found that I really like the VGC gory red, and I love the VMC golds and brown. Its all about what you like and your preferences though, Once I left the "kiddie pool" of only using GW paints (cuz it was somehow safest in my mind lol). I started experimenting with other paints. Now I have P3, Army Builder (there plate-mail metallic is awesome BTW). VGC, VMC, and even a few FoW.

Pretty much everything has been said but i will at least say that I had it with pot style paint containers and long ago went to try VMC and VMGC and fell in love with the drip bottles for easy mixing/thinning and also the quality of the paint i feel is great i do think i have to agree the vmc range i think is a bit more pigment heavy which is nice for some colors and not much a problem for others like grey if your grey is a little less sparky its no big deal but lets say yellow for example maybe you're trying to paint bretonians with a low pigment yellow it will apear kinda washed out and lazy almost dull in a sense but with higher pigment its more bright happy and screams for attention.

i think vallejo is a great company with lots of colors and tones over all between the two ranges but in the end the differences between VMC and VMGC are fixedby simply varnishing your models id suggest airbrushing vallejo matte varnish as it works best for me

Thanks for all the replies.

That is what I was wanting to do. I am trying to pick paints form several lines and use them to see what the difference between the lines and see what I like better. You guys have any recommendations what colors are good for each line? ie.e VAC for metallics, P3 for blues, VMC for browns, etc? I don't know what each line does well, color wise.
