The question came up in a game recently about the activation of character units.

Chiefly, the Witch Coven and Withershadow Combine.

If Battlecollege is to be believed - http://battlecollege.wikispaces.com/mkiiCoven
The witches of the Witch Coven are essentially solos, each one activating on it's own with its own movement and action. It mentions that specifically several times in the article (for example, under Ghost Walk it states that they can cast it four times with a Skarlock).

Is the Witch Coven special in this regard, or does this apply to character units as well? IE could I move one member of a Withershadow Combine, kill a model to open up a lane, activate the second to cast a spell in the newly opened lane, and then activate the third for a separate action?

If anyone could break this down for me, I'd really appreciate it!

The warcasters?

They are special. They are not a character unit. Their rules specifically
state that they can activate separately and share a focus pool.

Character units activate like units.

The Witch Coven are esentially 3 Warcasters. They all activate independenly of one another. Each will get her own Movement and action pahase and a seperate activation. You do not have to activate all 3 in a row. You could activate 1 witch then a jack then another witch and a unit,,,,,

The Withershadow Combine is a unit and follows all the rules of a unit. Each one will move then each one will gat an action, then there activation will end.
