We decided to play some skirmish games 550 points limit and got in 6 games. I only managed one win, I expected my beasts to do better at a lower points level but it was quite the opposite. The only game I won was the one where he took a level 2 battle mage instead of a war priest.
Overall the games were fine until I hit the war priest. I just never had a good answer to deal with him. He would throw all his dice into re-roll wounds in combat and the fact he can cast all three spells per magic phase was killer as well. I usually don't have these issues at 550 but man. Here are the lists played. Maybe I had bad comp, but I thought I was rolling pretty standard for such low points. It was always the damn spearman and warpriest that gave me hell. Everything would be going fine I would kill the swoardsmen, dispatch the long gunners but then when it came time to confront the spearmen it didn't seem to mater what I did they always killed the crap out of me. Rerolling hits and wounds, didn't seem to matter that I was T4. The Bestigor's really got punished by the spearmen. The best opertunity I had was I got a side charge with Bestigors I think 9 were alive, and a front charge with the Gors with 13 alive and still lost the combat by 3 or 4. He was running his spears 6 wide.

Don't get discouraged, Beastmen are not that good at low point games, actually you won't shine until 1500 when you can reliable have a horde of gor, a 30-40 strong unit of bestigor, the 206 BSB and a level 4. 550 is tough and I almost want to say forget about magic all together, a regular shaman is too weak, however I also feel with no way to make those Gor S4. Are you guys following strict army composition makeup at these low levels like 25% lord cap, 25% hero cap and so on? Wargor, HA, Shield, Sword of Might, Gnarled Hide 126 39 Gor, FC, AHW 337 5 Raiders 30 Razorgor 55 Maybe try that, the razorgor can be thrown into the Swordsmen and can hold them up for a turn or 3 (they will be hitting on 3s but wounding only on 6s, and that's only if they pass their fear test with no bsb it may fail and they will be hitting on 5s), raiders are honestly there because you need 3 legal units but they maybe able to redirect a unit for a turn or get in a flank for more combat res. Your Gor are very tough and cheap, they are your death star and you must divide and conquer a unit at a time and the other units are there to keep units busy while you take them on one by one. Also tha tWargor will have the upper ahnd with that priest, that priest may reroll misses and wounds but you'll get a 3+ armor save against his S4 attacks and with him only dishing out 2 attacks it would take an extremely lucky round of combat to make that happen.

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

Yes strict comp, I spotted him 9 points for full squads since things like handgunners are minimum 10 man. I don't think the 9 points was the issue. The swordsmen were easy to deal with. Everygame my bestigors or gors would punch through them with minimal losses. It was always that spearmen block with the priest 19 attacks rerolling hits and wounds. I tried to do a miasma on them so they hit on 5's and I still couldn't get it done. Those rerolls + his rank bonus just did me in. I will try a wargor but I figured without a counter to his priest like a debuff, I would just lose that fight. The handgunners are actually kind of nasty too. They jacked my shaman one game with sniping when I came up short on a charge. That priest just seems amazing for the points, hatred, 3 awesome bound spell buffs that they can cast every turn with no miscasts. All for like 70 points. We talked and in two weeks I think we are going to bump up to 1250.

Priests look a lot better at low points. At higher points you start seeing more priests competing for power dice, and when the enemy mages start moving to Lvl 4 then the priest's no magic level really starts to suck (even worse when the enemy starts taking two mages and you can't play one power dice I dare you to try and dispel on one dice shenanigans).

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”
