I've been experimenting with different colour schemes for a Necron army I want to start, I've seen this blue coloured rust on a few models and it looks really good but I can't replicate it myself. I have a few links one is for the GW VC black nights and the other it a Necron overlord they had a how to paint the coven throne in white dwarf 385 which has the blue rust on it, but I can t find it anywhere . Here are some links to the models

If anyone knows a good tutorial for this rust, or knows how to paint it themselves I'd really like to know so leave a comment.

Search this forum for Verdigris. That is the name of oxidized copper and brass.

In most cases it's a thinned down turquoise paint or applied as a pigment powder using alcohol as a binder.

But aren't Necrons made of impossibly strong metals? Why would they make ones from a metal that oxidizes? If you run your army like that you are gonna have a tough time explaining it to certain fluff mongers!

Les makes a patina (blue oxidation for coppers) and rust wash. Looks excellent.

Why is it that only those who have never fought in a battle are so eager to be in one?

Copper plating for decoration.
Or they long to return to their old mortal forms thus they plate themselves with metals that will eventually fade to nothing, a fault with their tomb world, lord found a way to give them mortality by making the metal capable of oxidising, etc.

Most people opt for very bright, almost electric turquoise washes for their verdigris. Here's an example that I really liked, where the painter took a somewhat more subtle approach. Scroll down a bit for his method, along with a handy little timeline of copper oxidation I dug up for those who want to try something different, but keep it grounded in reality.

Unless you're painting your Necrons like an all-female manga-styled version of the A-team with angel wings as your theme, I don't think anyone would/should waste their breath in debate about the fluff behind it. The (old) Necron codex itself shows examples of "rusty" looking Necrons. I gather as long as they're metallic all's fair.

Also, there are a lot of metals that look like other metals, you don't have to say it really is copper, just a metal that appears similar, and oxidizes in a similar way, maybe this copper-like metal takes several millennium to oxidize. The world (and beyond) is your oyster! Flex your imagination and never be afraid to do something different. Just do it well.

It's more of the fact that rusting is also partially the metal degrading and Necrons wouldn't be made out of something that would weather like that. Now as someone mentioned earlier where they choose to have it for one reason or another can be a good point!
