After The past year i have not came to a decision on which army i should play.
I like close combat and guns. I like the idea of converting some models. I would like a semi competitive army.
Southampton, Hampshire, England, British Isles, Europe, Earth, Sol, Sector 001
How about the IG?
We got all sorts of heavy hitting toys that the other armys can only dream of
You could do an Lord Commissar plus two Shotgun Vet squads (GL or Meltas) with 6 scout Sentinels (three squads of two).
Just did a quick cost and both lists will come out just under 500pts. Not bad for a light choppy IG list.
So much scope for convertions in that small list, for starters the Scout Sentinels could be made to look like the combat armour from Avatar. the shotgun guys could also be made to look like their from Avatar. Or you could make them look like the USMC and the loaders from Alien. You could do a kind of Killzone look. Hell you could even do a Halo style type IG.
Hope I've given you some food for thought
Spoiler:
Just look what I'm doing, a sort of Battlemech type IG.
Had nothing but complments and "OOooohh"s when that list gets played.

Those IG look great! I like the command Sentinel especially. What do you count that as?
Not too much close-combat goodness in the IG codex, I'm afraid, if that's what the OP had their heart set on. You've got Ogryn and blob squads and Straken, but I've always felt making CCIG is a bit of a square peg in a round hole.

DoW, that be the MkIV Battle Angel, it counts as a kitted out 205pt LRBT exterminator. You'll find that as well as the lesser MkI Combat Angel in my gallary
Why is it every one forgets that a sentinel can fight in hand to hand combat? gear them up with a heavy flamer and you have a very efective assulty unit which only an anti-tank round (or powerfist) can take down with ease.

They are the best and they are the best in the fluff, they are more powerful then anything in the series, everybody but the Orks will lose, even the people on Dakka says orks will win,
Space Marines will lose, everybody but the Orks will lose, we might as well buy only Ork models cause everyone but the Orks will lose,
Necrons would be quite good for you. They have both close combat and guns. They're also less well-rounded and have some clear drawbacks such as low I and WS.
Starting Sons of Horus Legion
Starting Daughters of Khaine
2000pts Sisters of Silence
4000pts Fists Legion
Sylvaneth A forest
III Legion 5000pts
XIII Legion 9000pts
Hive Fleet Khadrim 5000pts
Kabal of the Torn Lotus .4000pts
Coalition of neo Sacea 5000pts

Oh good call. Forgot about Necrons.
They indeed would fit both of your desires, while also not being Marines, yet effectively as durable (if not durable-er?).
