For a long time now I have wanted to get a land raider for my Thousand Sons, especially a Mk IIb one. However, at £60 plus postage, it is just beyond my price limit for a single model (and that's generally higher for Forge World then Games workshop) and so I am looking at getting a land raider on ebay and then converting it to be Mkiib one, the idea at the moment is to try and construct the WWI esk sides with plasticard and greenstuff/grey stuff.
Has anyone else done this before? Does anyone have advice for doing it? And does anyone have any ideas how to model rivets on it to give it an archaic look?

Yes, I use Swooping Hawks, they are lovely models so why not?

I've done what you want to do before, strangely enough also for Thousand Sons (The gods must be telling us something, MORE MKII B's! ).

A word of advice, use plasticard on the thinner side. It's a lot easier to work with than thicker stuff, and can be reinforced with additional layers. Also, a metal ruler and a good sharp knife work wonders, and make the whole job of lining up panels and making matching shapes much easier.

Here's my example. If I were to do it again, I would do it much better (it was done before I applied the above tips). Need to fix the blue too haha. More Pictures and some details on my blog here

Should be able to get those fairly easy, did you use templates for the side bits?

Nah, went by eye and what felt right. Not my best piece to be fair, was an early one.

What I would do is cut the top shape (the irregular angled bit) to a size and shape that you are happy with, then trace around it onto the plasticard enough times to make two sets of tops and bottoms.

The doors/side panels can then be cut using the lengths of your top/bottom panels The doors were a little tricky, since I didn't have spares. I ended up scoring the outline of a door into the platsic, but not enough to cut through it.

Plastic tubes with a decent diameter should be enough to become a mount for the lascannons, of which go on top of one another with a little trimming of the power cables. Hope that helps.

Why not use the Forge World addons?

They don't do a conversion kit, :( and the actual kit is £62 plus the postage... so it's way too expensive and so I'm getting a regular land raider off ebay to convert, though if nothing comes up for a month or so, I may save up and just get the kit before it gets a price rise.

is the Chapterhouse kit not an option? http://chapterhousestudios.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=85_78&product_id=230

If you can manage to break apart an ebay salvage (shouldn't be too hard, considering the kit replaces most of it) then that should be a viable option

How is chapter house like for quality of product and postage and payment? Do they Take paypal and how much is delivery to england and how long does it usually take? Can't believe Forge world stopped doing the upgrade kit when their competition is making a similer one, if they had I would have gone to Forge world rather then as I am likely to do, chapter house.
EDIT: I don't suppose anyone has had experience with the chapter house kit? And what are there banded shoulder pads like?

Chapterhouse makes a conversion kit for that style of LR, $25 USD.
