Not exactly a Memorial Day thing (an American holiday, today), but here are some *really* old 40k models that might be enjoyed just for the view, especially for the newer players. We can all remark the weight gain marines have suffered as they age.
As best I recall, these marines had actually seen some Space Hulk action, back when G.H.W. Bush was at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. They've been in the deep freeze since then.
Enjoy.

Back in the days when the plastic wasn't grey. xD That is really, really cool. What ever happened to Space Hulk? Are the rules still in production, and do people still play it?

The space hulk box *I* own is in good shape and can be seen in my little comic link in the sig.
GW rereleased Space Hulk two years ago with a few updated rules and *far* more bad-ass looking termies. Look 'em up on the 'Net. I didn't buy any.
There were a couple of guys at the FLGS who were getting in a few games. I'd like to play more often but there are few takers.

Before GW closed down their 40k internet chat site, mentioning 'squats' was taboo and would get your thread locked and/or you banned. I believe there was an incredibly negative backlash, against Space Dwarves. The reputation was uber cheese and over the top codex domination. Thus the pejorative "Beardiness" or "Beardy" insult. GW 'retconned' them out of existence, and they were gone by 4e. 2e & 3e players can elaborate better.

Hm. Damn shame. Kinda indicative of GW's business rep, though. It'd be like them to shelve the stuff and pretend it never existed, instead of try and fix it.

Not really. Squats just never transitioned from Rogue Trader. Some of the designers lamented that they just never figured out a way to give them a unique aesthetic moving forward. 40K essentially was reborn in 2nd Edition. This was the first edition with a cohesive vision for the setting, and an established timeline and fluff.
I think what happened is that there was no good idea how to make the Squats their own army. The biker theme from Rogue Trader was fine for Rogue Trader. Everything was a little silly in Rogue Trader (half eldar astropaths, rival human and ork biker gangs, etc.). 2nd Edition, or "Modern 40K", so to speak, was much darker and serious. If you take away the biker aesthetic to make the Squats more serious, the old Squat army becomes hard to distinguish from "Short Imperial Guard". They used the same tanks in RT, the same basic weapons (lasguns), the same basic armor (flak), and the same essential back story (just being environmentally adapted humans).
Honestly, I kinda wish that GW had taken the route of making the Squats a range for the Imperial Guard. I mean, they had Cadians, Catachans, Mordians, Tallarns, Valhallans. Eventually they added Steel Legion, Praetorians, Vostroyans. In 2nd Edition's metal lines, Imperial Guard had more figures than anybody. Why the Squats couldn't have fit in there, nobody knows. Give them a half Codex like the Catachans eventually got or something. Make the fans happy, don't render an entire army obsolete. "Serioused up" with modern models that eschew the biker look, the Squats would have been fine in "modern 40K".
Not every classic Squat model ws this silly:
Plenty of them looked like this guy:
Certainly this squad isn't ridiculous (unless you just don't like Dwarves, lol)
Squats became "taboo" on official 40K forums simply because GW got tired of answering questions about them. Instead of coming up with an official response, they just stopped talking about it. There were some "unofficial" responses, but never anything on the site. It's one of GW's less admirable decisions. Seems pretty childish to tell the customers who have bought your product "Shut up! Leave me alone". Nobody "hated" the Squats, and there was no "negative backlash". They were around for years, and sold a fair amount of models. The Squat models were in the catalog from 88-92 or so. In fact, there were new Squat models that were ultimately unreleased when GW decided to abandon the Squat line, as late as 93 or 94. The term beardy has a few origins, but has nothing to do with a hatred of Squats, lol. There was a certain hatred of some units from the old Warhammer Fantasy Dwarf armies though.

Oh, we posting old stuff all up in here? How about some Space Crusade Scouts:
Or an old Techmarine with a Rapier Laser Destroyer?:
Or some much smaller assault Terminators?:
And a tiny Rhino!:
My first exposure to 40k models was through the first Space Hulk boardgame, and since then I've always had an appreciation for the old and kinda funky looking models. As you can see, I chose to add a bunch to my Crimson Fists.

Yeah, most of that is not actually correct, sorry.
The term 'Beardy' for more 'extreme' players has been around for a lot longer than the Squats, who were largely beardless anyway.
Squats in Rogue Trader were no more unbalanced than any other army. They had no reputation for being over the top... they were just another army.
There was also no particular negative backlash against them. At least not from the fan base. The reason that Squat discussion was banned on the GW message boards was simply that the threads inevitably turned into flame wars between those who wanted squats back (many of whom hadn't even been playing the game when they were actually around) and those who for some reason felt inclined to bash those who wanted Squats back... The volunteer mods, who were largely left to their own devices with no real support from GW, just got sick of dealing with it.
According to the studio, Squats in Rogue Trader sold about as well as any of the other armies. They were dropped because (supposedly) the studio couldn't find a way to keep them in the game that did the Dwarf archetype justice, as Space Wolves had stolen their Space Viking schtick. Throughout second edition when they still had the starter set 'Black Codex' list but no models available, nobody really seemed to care. It was only when 3rd edition rolled around and they were gone completely that people suddenly started demanding to be able to use them.

On the old model front...
My first Space Marine army was a mix of the 2nd edition starter set minis, and a couple of sets of the old Space Crusade boardgame that I picked up on the cheap...
2nd ed starter:
Space Crusade:
Some later additions to the old model collection:
Squat Servitor:
Squat Techpriest:
Imperial Assassin... still one of my favourite GW models ever:
Zoat! Another race lost in the mists of revised history:
And the original Shokk Attack Gun... the single greatest Okry creation ever :

I'm happy to be corrected. Having only come into 40k at 4e's beginning, I've merely gone with word passed and past. My Space Hulk days never managed to transition into 40k RT proper. I got heavily into Paladium RPGs, instead ( Heroes Unlimited!).
As I stated, 2e & 3e players would be better informed. "2e & 3e players can elaborate better."
The 'beardy" thing, though? C'mon, man! *That* has to be the dwarf thing.
This, insaniak, insaniak wrote:The term 'Beardy' for more 'extreme' players has been around for a lot longer than the Squats, who were largely beardless anyway.

I gleaned form word of mouth and kibbitzing with players in the stores and such. Perhaps what I came to believe (and happily will change my view to what you've said) simply evolved by word of mouth, the old "telephone" game where the facts distort with each subsequent telling.
Then again, maybe it *was* this, here in the USA.
I just thought it'd be cool to post some old model pix.
