After a very pleaseant response to my 'holy grail of miniatures' post i decided to make a similar post concerning model kits.
As with my previous post on mini's i find that the vast amount of sci fi and fantasy model kits is making singling out the good ones REALLY hard.

So by all means, tell me what your favorites are!

There's a super detailed millennium falcon model made by a Japanese company called fine molds, think it retails for $150-ish and is considered to be an extremely challenging kit to build. It's the holy grail for star wars modeling geeks.

I'd personally go crazy for any models from Aliens, in particular the APC, dropship and Nostromo.

I also have a soft spot for any 80 Japanese mecha kits...macross, votoms, dorvack, etc. Not so much the Gundam stuff, though.

Something I have sat upstairs on its stand - a fully lit, Special-Ops Fleet Black version of the NX Refit class.

But with a proper NCC number (NCC-76206, USS Aurora Borealis) so it could be a "baby" Sovereign.

Speaking of macross models... My mom gave me a box of my little brother's old models for christmas, mostly badly painted star trek, star wars and battles far stuff but this baby was sitting at the bottom. The spries are still in the plastic bags.

I know that Gundam has been done to death, but IMO there are some excellent kits of the Zeon suits - if you are not familiar with the series the Zeon are the "bad guys" to the Gundam "good guys". Gundam Planet is a good site to peruse.

As for what I personally consider the Holy Grail of Sci-fi kits, you must look to the work of sensei Kow Yokoyama - the inventor of the iconic Maschinen Krieger line of power-armor.

See here... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maschinen_Krieger_ZbV_3000 ... to familiarize yourself with the history of the line.

See here... http://www.scale120.com/ ... for jaw-dropping examples of the sheer awsomeness that can be achieved.

Akuyaku Bad Guy #1 tank was my Holy Grail . They put it back into production a while back and you can now get one for around 70 bucks so I got one last year.

A 1/72 scale model that can be used for 28mm with minimal modifications

Even more of a Holy Grail though, is the Warzone Bauhaus Grizzly Tank. It was a strait ripoff of the Akuyaku and was made under license for Warzone by Armorcast and/or Forgeworld. Unpainted versions are uber rare and even painted/assembled versions reportedly fetch a few hundred at auction. I wish I'd bought the one I saw at Games Paradise for 80 bucks in 1996!

I can't express how much I would love to have one of these!

Yeah the maschinen krieger stuff is totally badass. I've got a few unbuilt kits in my stockpile. I love the extreme detail people lavish on those models.

I was so pissed that they never made a sequel, I still love that movie (John bigbootay...Tay !)
Is that big ship from the movie the black hole? I also used to own the original Space 1999 toys, one of my favorites.

The black hole is a great movie, although extremely dark for Disney.

I had the Armorcast Madcat and Atlas models. I enjoyed building them quite a lot, and after about 3 years of gracing my display cabinet I sold them, so now someone else is enjoying them.

I also have an Akuyaku #1.

I rather like the look of the five star stories kits.
Does anyone know if they are any good?.

Also, thanks for the great input everyone!.

Wow, loving what everyone's picking as their holy grail models.

Just FYI:

FIne Molds Aluminum Falcon: It has about 1,000 parts. The box is huge and worth every penny.

The Macross Tomahawk by Bandai is outdated. Wave made a new kit which is 3x's the price. But it's also 3x's better. They're also making some of the other Destroids too.

I guess for me would be toss up between a new kit of the Glaug and Queadlunn Rau. Maybe Wave will be nice enough to do a fresh new kit for them. As for existing kits, it would have to be Jehuty from ZOE 2nd Runner. Kotbokiya finally came out with the kit. No resin kit for me! :-)

What the hell is an Aluminum Falcon?
