Hello, i was wondering, as i have started a skirmish wargame using my own custom models made of various materials

what whould be the best way to spay and paint these?

should i just put the primer over the material or should i use something like tape to go over it first the create a good surface for painting/spraying

it depends on the "various materials" and the quality of the detail on the model
