Dan and I got together at FTW Games to play a game among the 40K crowd. I went back to my beloved Irish Guards and Dan showed up with the Heavy Tank Company. This would be very tough for the Irish. Luckily, we got Fighting Withdrawal and Dan was the attacker - this made my fleeing in terror look like strategy!

On the one hand, a well painted Irish Guards army, on the other a bunch of primed Panzers. Given the high standard of most FoW battle reports I've seen here and on other sites, this one really lets the side down. Dan looks suspiciously like a power gamer.

Actually, this is Dan's first ever Fighting Withdrawal game and I think his 10th game ever. While I like to have all my stuff painted, I wasn't going to turn down a request to play with a fan and help him learn the game over his army being painted - though I prefer it.

Maybe my comment was unfair, but when someone turns up with a powerful army list that's unpainted, chances are they've chosen their army because of what it does and not how it looks. And it looks rubbish on your beautiful terrain next to your lovingly painted army - in fact, it looked all too much like so many WH40k games. I guess the test will be whether he paints his models.

Hey chillax, some of us paint more slowly.

He should paint them red. All the best panzerdivisions were painted red. True story.

Great battle report. If he's a slow painter I recommend spray and dip to speed him up.

Your comment was unfair. You made bunch of assumptions about someone and a situation you know nothing about.

He wanted to play the v3 rules to make sure he still liked the game before diving in and finishing the painting up. Now, this would not be my approach -- I can't stand playing unpainted stuff -- in fact, I refuse to play anything unpainted. But, I didn't feel it my place to judge him and turn down an opportunity to welcome a player back into the fold -- even one who's approach to the game (as far as painting is concerned) doesn't match my own.

That is a pretty broad assumption to make and is one of the reasons why people call a lot of the "I prefer my opponents to use painted minis" people elitists. It can't have to do with it being a new army, or just not enough time to get to painting due to a busy life, but it must be because they chose the army to be a power gamer. Really ignorant attitude to have. Does you attitude change if they showed up to a tank battle with an armored recon force instead of a heavy armored company or are they just as likely to be a power gamer?
