Hi guys,

I already run a 'blog' of sorts over at asrai.com , however, whether by a lack of members or people just disliking my content, I've received very little response. So I thought I'd bring it here to Dakka as well

The following are just reposts from my original blog;

Threatened it a while ago, but finally getting off my butt to start a progress thread for my new Wood Elf army
I'll try and post a variety of things. Including WIP pics, battle reports and assorted other things regarding my little force

__

So, after a guy at my club was practically GIVING away a bunch of Wood Elf gear, I managed to score:
17x Glade Guard
8x Glade Riders
1x Old Warhawk rider. (I don't really like the rider, so I think I'll just use it as a Great Eagle)
5x Wardancers
12x Dryads
20x OOP Glade guard I believe? They all have spears. He just threw them in there, but I'm not all that keen on them...
1x Waywatcher Lord
1x Highborn
1x Male Spellsinger

Most of them were on the spure that had been primed (a pet peeve of mine ), and the characters and a few wardancers had been painted in a rather intense manner (dettol time!).
However, along with the Army Book, I picked this lot up for a paltry $120. I'm from Australia, so considering the prices of the store down the road, I was fairly stoked!

Anyways, this week I went ahead and assembled the lot. Still need to do some serious stripping (wow... just couldn't have written that any better ) but we're almost ready to get painting entirely
Started a test model for my dryads that I thought I'd share with you guys!

I own Woodland Scenics autumn cover. I'm still working out how to use it properly and its clumpy... any suggestions for better autumn cover?

ALRIGHT! In case that wasn't enough content, I am playing my first Fantasy game in over 18 months this Thursday night. Just a little 1000 points, but I'll be sure to let you know how I go!
Here is the list I'm bringing:

Characters:
Spellweaver
level 4 250

Core:
16x Glade Guard
Musician
Champ 204

8x Glade Riders
Musician 201

12x Dryads
144

Special:
7x Wardancers
Musician
Bladesinger (Champ) 147

Rare:
Great Eagle 50

TOTAL: 996

I'm anticipating a little bit of flack for bringing a level 4 to a 1000 point game, but I'm just getting back in the swing of Fantasy things
Also, please remember that this list was made using the models I have available (proxying 2 wardancers)!

So played my first two games with Wood Elves tonight - and wowsers did I learn a lot!

Game 1:

First game was up against Warriors of Chaos. I was well petrified, as I'm told this is one of the harder match ups for Wood Elves.

He came baring a lvl2 Tzeentch sorcerer, 2 units of Warriors with Shields, unit of knights, warshrine and 16 Marauders.
He deployed both units of warriors and the shrine on a far flank (bit of a derp here), and deployed the Marauders w/ sorcerer & knights in the centre.
I matched this by deploying the Glade Riders & Great Eagle on the Warrior-Shrine flank, dryads & GG centre, then the wardancers on the right flank.

Danced a merry jig around the warriors & shrine with the Glade Riders & eagle, march blocking and twisting them into infuriation. The marauders were shot to pieces before being flank WIPED by the dancers.
The Spellweaver was by far and away MVP. Got off Dwellers 3 times - took out a unit of knights and a 3/4s of a unit of warriors. Great rolls for me - and gave me a super massive appreciation for how sweet that spell is!
When he got wise to my avoidance tactics, he swung the warriors out to take on the dancers, resulting in a dancer charge, eagle rear charge and a dryad flank charge - talk about massacre!

The game ended with 2 dead Glade Riders and no other casualties for myself.

Key learning points from this game:
1) Glade Riders & Great Eagles are AWESOME at being pests.
2) Outmanoeuvring with dryads & wardancers make them terrifying on the charge.
3) Dwellers. [censored] wow.

___

Game 2:

Second game was against Dark Elves. He brought a lvl 2 Sorcerer, cold one knights, dark riders, 10 xbowmen, 10 witches and a block of spearmen with an assassin.

This game was a comedy of errors on my part and really showed to me how Wood Elves DON'T work. I deployed badly, leaving my Dryads and Wardancers in front of the bulk of his force on the flank - thinking they wouldn't have the speed to get across the board if I placed them differently.
I also left the Spellweaver without a unit (for whatever reason, I thought he'd be fine on his lonesome).

The Glade Riders & eagle moved to redirect the Cold One Knights, who made the Eagle flee and passed a redirect to charge the glade riders. The unit was wayyy too far away for a flank charge to be possible, and made his forces far more compact.
After he moved up, and having a few units threatening to charge the wardancers, I decided on charging with the Dryads - in an effort to choose the lesser of two evils. The gambit paid off when the Assassin popped out, and failed to do anything to the unit. I was however beaten back in static combat res.
My weaver was shot to pieces by the xbowmen in turn 2 - no spells off and it hurt when it came to dispelling! Although I was able to shoot out the witches and chase down the dark riders, it ended up being a serious clean up operation for the Dark Elves.
They ended up ganging the Dryads and Dancers who never got the opportunity to get into a good position due to my silly deployment.

Key learning points from this game;
1) DEPLOYMENT IS KEY! I feel that if I were able to give myself more space to breath with the dancers & dryads across the board, I would have had much more flexibility.
2) Not putting the spellweaver in a unit? HURRRDURRRR
3) Only redirect units if its going to help. Redirection for the sake of it - even when it won't set up a flank/rear charge or put the unit out in a non-viable area is just a waste of resources.

__

So my questions to you are;

What unit are you putting your caster in?
What do you find to be better priority targets with the GG? I've been finding I shoot at the lightly armoured/no armour units, hoping for panic tests. Heavily armoured cavalry just seems like a real low chance of any success - and Dwellers has been kicking ass!

___

Just thought I'd post up some painting progress on my army

After I did the above test Dryad, I wasn't terribly happy. It wasn't as cool as I'd have liked it to be. So I painted the rest of the unit like 'spirits'

Let me know what you think!

Looks good but there is a P&M blog section, I've informed the mods, they should move it for you.

Thanks mate!

Only thing is that I plan to post a lot of game related stuff here too... Is that still alright for the P&M section?
